For storytellers in the theater, film, and literature worlds, the Holocaust continues to be a source of inspiration through tragedy — a perennial catalogue of unspeakable suffering, heroic escapes, devastating memories, and therapeutic healing. It’s a rock for which no amount of turning could reveal its innumerable surfaces. In Holocaust: A Living Journey Book, the theater company What If Works Inc. will showcase nine of these countless Holocaust narratives in a multimedia production drawn from historical and personal accounts of the genocide. In self-scripted monologues, nine actors will inhabit key Holocaust players, such as Anne Frank; Antonio Dobrowolski, the oldest living survivor of Auschwitz; and Sir Nicholas Winton, the British humanitarian who organized the escape of more than 2,700 Jewish children. Stanzas from wartime poet Nelly Sachs, archival film clips, and Holocaust-era musical compositions performed by a live clarinetist and cellist will contribute to this event’s multisensory feast. See it now under the bright lights of host venue GableStage (1200 Anastasia Ave., Coral Gables) before it visits the United Kingdom in July.
