Best TV News Anchor Miami 2011 - Calvin Hughes

Readers' Choice: Belkys Nerey, WSVN-7
Most TV news anchors are saccharine. They work too hard for our attention, overplaying emotions like freshmen drama school students. Then they end every story on a note of hope, even when the facts are bleak. Not Calvin Hughes. When the Emmy Award-winning WPLG Channel 10 newscaster headed down to Port-au-Prince for a three-part series called "Haiti: One Year Later," he didn't choke up, even when covering earthquake victims with amputated limbs. And he didn't inject false hope into the country's struggle to overcome crime, disease, and poverty. Instead, he reported the story gracefully and professionally, ending one piece by lamenting that most Haitians still lived in "inhumane conditions with an inept government, no leadership, no work, and, dare I say, no hope for some that tomorrow will bring a better day." Growing up in Cleveland and East St. Louis, Hughes learned that reporters' platitudes and smiling sign-offs often hide the intransigence of poverty and blight. His reporting reveals those problems without dismissing them.

How dare you say I have no taste.. I NEVER watch 7 News. I want to be informed and entertained. Hard to do when Calvin Hughes' monotone is reading the news like a fourth grader is reading a book outloud. I've watched Channel 10 for 25 years until now. Small wonder its ratings have lagged in the evening new since Calvin became part of the team. And speaking of the team, it's easy to see how bored Laurie, Will and Trent get in their interaction with Hughes. I think his natural ability would be to help people who can't sleep at night by giving the news, he would surely make people go to sleep easily. As far as natural abilities, there is no ability in reading the news without emotion. Zip. Nada. Nothing. Rien. yawwwwwwwwwnnnnn

@Sophia you obviously have no taste, you probably are one of those unrealistic viewers who like the sensationalism of channel 7 where they turn every story into a "Breaking News" or "Life Threatening/The World Is Coming To An End" event. Calvin doesn't try to hard, he is a natural anchor and is the same person he is on TV as he is in person, unlike many news personalities. He is truly a class act, don't be jealous of his natural abilities.

interesting story....and your take on Calvin Hughes. Of course he didn't show any choke up.. he didn't feel anything. why would he react? The man is the most boring anchor in South Florida. Which is why I've switched. He was putting me to sleep...I feel badly for Laurie Jennings, someone who puts her all into reporting the news without sensation, but shows she really cares about what she's doing. Calvin Hughes on the other hand, reports the news like he's reading the ingredients off a loaf of bread. If you have problem sleeping at night, I suggest you watch the Local 10 11:00 evening news, he will surely put you to sleep
