Best Breakfast Miami 2011 - First & First Southern Baking Company - CLOSED

The American South has given us Hee Haw, boll weevils, Dollywood, and 92 percent of all mosquitoes in the United States. But it has also bestowed upon us Ray Hicks of West Virginia. It was he who brought Miami locals the First & First Southern Baking Company. When it comes to breakfast, Hicks's hot licks include cornmeal/blueberry pancakes; potato pancakes; blackberry waffles; chicken and waffles (with real maple syrup); a "lumberjack" breakfast of eggs, fried potatoes, two pancakes, two bacon strips, two sausage links, and a fruit cup; oatmeal; and, of course, grits. Most breakfasts run $5 to $9 and are served from 8 to 11 a.m. It's almost enough to make you want to put on a Lynyrd Skynyrd CD. Almost.

When my girlfriend and I had the opportunity to try First and First Southern Baking Company at 9:00am on a weekday and found the place empty, it should have been a warning sign. After all....how do you mess up breakfast? Easy! Just serve raw undercooked croissants (and this place calls itself a baking company?). Then serve scrambled eggs swimming in oil and there you have it! Don't even bother to see if this is all true. I found the owner outside and mentioned the problems. He told me that he had a new cook in the kitchen. But, this is no excuse for a restaurant that was just voted "Best Breakfast"! Who actually votes and how can we trust reviews when personnel experience is the complete opposite?

Never heard of this place, nor do I care to drive down to Downtown either, what about Original Pancake House or even better Cracker Barrel?
