Best Club DJ Miami 2007 - Joe Dert

Readers' Choice: DJ Danny Daze
Why do we like Joe Dertç Well, because his mashups are Derty, damn it! Not long ago, the Miami Beach Jewbano homeboy was on his way to celebreality superstar status as the drummer for nu-metal band Endo. He signed right before the band went on tour with rock icons Megadeth, which led to an avalanche of accolades and hype for Endo. They hooked up with Los Angeles music producer David Schiffman, the William Morris Agency, and the Firm. As Endo wrapped up its second album, the band was added to the 2003 Ozzfest tour lineup. Alas, Endo was among the casualties from the merger between Sony Music and BMG. Dert (real name Joe Eshkenazi) went back to his old gig: DJing at night clubs. He landed stints at Automatic Slim's and Rokbar before snagging the Saturday-night residency spot at Snatch and Wednesday nights at Glass, where he's perfected his entertaining blend of rock, hip-hop, and funk. Dert can drop an Eminem track behind rock instrumentals so smoothly Dr. Dre would cough up his chronic. Over the past few months, Dert has added Set on Thursday nights and Karu & Y on Friday nights to his growing list of gigs. And that's how we like it, damn it!

I must say that reading this was fun. Look, DJ Strip, bashing other djs makes you look bad. It doesnt matter if your a "superstar" dj (which i can assure you, although you would want us to believe your fairy-tale stories, you are not) people will not respect you if you try to hate on other djs. It DEFENATLY was not a smart move doing it on New Times, which everyone reads. Joe Dert is a good DJ, ive seen one of his shows. Take it from another DJ, sit back, relax...New Times didnt just show up one night and give this award to Joe. Maybe when you make your "triumphant return" to Miami, you can take this title.

Joe Dert is The Best Djay . Real musician (english & spanish music) top that!

DJ Strip, stop hating, & grow up. You're bitching about "the Best DJ in Miami" when you're not even in Miami. This is not a wise PR move. Let your skills talk for themselves, Like Joe Dert & Leventhal. Sucka!!

Glad to rile you all up so easily, and you are absolutely right about "no one " knowing who I am like yourself, I only work with someones. Dont need a P.R. person either, got plenty of time to bust balls especially when its so easily done and well deserved. Joe ran his mouth behind my back to the new times when I was in Miami in '05 when I spoke the truth about Mark Leventhal in an article so its well deserved. He's a big boy, sure he can handle it. No such thing as bad press. Rock on Joe Dert, let me know when you make it up to the big league here in NYC, I'll be sure to put you on.

Dear DJ Strip,

For someone who is supposedly so busy working famous clubs with famous people you certainly have a lot of free time to respond to internet postings about how sucky you are. Unless of course it's not you responding and it's your PR person (as if anyone would lower themselves to doing that job)...in that case you're even stupider cause that SOB can't put a sentence together to save either one of your lives.

Look DGay Strip, it's enough that no one has heard of you or even cares, but please don't Strip yourself of any further dignity by continuing to post items proclaiming your success.

Anybody with a 2nd grade education could conclude your pitiful, self-promoting postings are merely the sign of an insecure loser.

Do us all a favor and go "DJ" at a retirement home where you'll be amongst people your own age.

See now if you were in Miami back in the day when it meant something to be there you would know just how I got my name, but you were'nt like most of you jonny came way to latelies. Well here goes, July 4th 1992 I was spinning at the Spot with George Acosta and Gary James dared me to wear an Uncle Sam costume for $500 bucks so I did and then proceeded to get up on the bar with models Naomi Cambell and Christy Turlington (when real models actually hung out in Miami) As we were dancing I told them to pull off my velcro pants as they proceeded to flash their breasts to the crowd. The crowd went crazy and Tom Austin who used to write a weekly article covering the club scene called Shelter in New Times (when it was worth writing about) said that the weekend ended with a strip tease act at the Spot with models flashing everyone while Uncle Sam dropped his pants, we are not sure who he was but we know he DJs there so we will call him DJ STRIP. So now you know, now tell me how did Joe Dert get his name, from a lame movie? how utterly unoriginal, quite like playing other peoples mash ups. Or is it from a lack of personal hygiene? LOL! Google that.

If you call getting fired paving the way then you are right on! Joe got fired from ROKBAR so I could take over on sat nights, and his buddy mark leventhal got fired on tuesdays at Automatic Slims for literally and figuritively falling asleep behind the DJ booth. Never heard of me? thats cause I'm pretty uch known by somebodies not just anybody or a bunch of "local" nobodies that werent around when it meant something to live in o r visit South Beach from 1991-1994 when I Djed at THE SPOT with Gary James, opening night/week and resident DJ at REBAR, opening night/week and resident DJ at SINATRA BAR, opening night DJ and resident DJ at MICKEYS, not to mention resident DJ at THE WHISKY,VAN DOME, AMNESIA, PARRAGON, THE LOFT 2 mant to list. But if you were there back in the day you would know who I am or if you were in NYC where Im from and live currently you might know I opened SNITCH , DJ, Live sound engineer and manager from '04-07 for real rock stars VELVET REVOLVER, FUEL, resident DJ at RnR with MIKE DIAMOND, DJ and sound engineer for THE RAMONES, JOAN JETT, BLONDIE, SONIC YOUTH, ROB ZOMBIE. Currently working at RETOX, MIKE DIAMONDS latest night club with SCOTT IAN and MATT PINFIELD. Most recently asked to open a 8000 square foot rock club at THE HARD ROCK HOTEL in LAS VEGAS with owners KEANU REEVES, KIRK HAMMOND, KID ROCK, SCOT IAN, MATT PINFIELD AND MIKE DIAMOND. South Beach is now and has been since the late '90 a refuge for all the losers who couldnt make it in NYC or L.A. P.S. everybody in the biz knows that bands pay to play at OZ fest for exposure so I wouldnt be too proud of that fact. Adios suckers! P.S. you can find out who the real deal DJ is at deejayu.com for a real rock star studded resume and client list.

Wait minute are you speaking about Joe Eshkenazi aka DJ Joe Dert, who has earned his stripes (no pun intended) not only as a successful drummer but as well as a DJ. DJ Strip it is obvious you did not do your homework prior to posting your comment, so heres a little info on the Band Name Endo (you know the never has been band that no one ever heard), whose drummer is DJ Joe Dert. Endo has won the rock industrys respect by tearing it up in 5000+ seat venues and a solid following all across the country. Touring and opening for some Rocks finest; Ozzy Osbourne, Korn, Megadeth and Marilyn Mason, artists whom I am sure youve heard of since you state youre a DJ. In addition, Joe and Endo have received a Gold Record and their music has even been featured in some of Hollywoods movie projects such as Dracula 2000, Daredevil and 11:14. Derts back and forth transition from the sticks to the turntables has been smooth and fueled by success and acclaim as it is evident with the accolade of being named Miamis Best Club DJ. In my opinion, as a frequent club goer DJ Joe Dert is one hottest Club DJs Miami has to offer. His smooth ability to mix and segway between hip hop, old skool, and funk mash-ups have made DJ Joe Dert take djing into a whole new level at the hottest clubs in Miami, such as his residency at Snatch, Glass and Karu-Y just to name a few. So the next time you feel the need to spew hateration about DJ Joe Dert, remember who paved the way for your short-lived days at Slims & Rockbar. Who is DJ Strip? Now days even a homeless can be searched through google and I cant seem to locate you!

You should come on back to Miami DJ Strip. DJ Dert will strip you down and show you how it's done. Btw, green is not a color anyone should wear.

Yes, SOUTH BEACH is shallow... pretentious... sleazy and whatever else you want to call it. Today's Sobe clubs have become something of a "tourist magnet" and feasting grounds for the Euro Trash and other wannabe's. Yet, Sobe thrives on the green paper these people bring to our local economy so we really can't frown upon these crowds.

As a Miami native, I have had many an evening in South Beach throwing back kamikaze's, and jack and cokes like they were the last coke in the desert. Therefore when I speak my mind I speak out of EXPERIENCE, not opinion. I am no amateur to the "scene". I believe that the unknown DJ Strip is speaking out of opinion, and maybe even out of emotion (maybe due to a failed career as a dj?) when he/she calls some of the FEW worthy DJs shallow and lacking talent.

I can personally say that I was at Slims many Friday nights when the place was slammed.. and guess who was on the turntables? You guessed it.. Joe Dert. I have to disagree with DJ Strip and say I wish there was more of a presence of such Dj's like Joe Dert who have kept it real. They not only know how to keep a crowd going, they know how to vary their mix of music to satisfy a variety of music goers.

DJ Strip I'm sorry your OPINION of our DJs are so negative. It sounds like you had a bad experience, or weren't able to break out in Sobe as we all know the industry can be cut-throat. As a DJ, like you claim to be, you must know there is as much politics that have NOTHING to do with talent or lack there of in this arena. Good luck to you wherever you may be, we only hope you can have the success that these DJs have and will continue to have.

Wow the talent pool must be as shallow as Paris Hilton if Joe Dirt is considered the best DJ in Miami, what happened did Mark Leventhal eat himself to death? Yeah Joe Dirt spun at Automatic Slims, but couldnt keep it packed even on a friday night, was fired from Rokbar along with being a former member of a never hasbeen band that no one ever heard of anyway. I guess it just proves if you stay in Miami long enough you get a bone thrown to you albeit a bone of no value or taste. Dont worry kids I will eventually come back to Miami and put all you failed musician wanna be DJs back on the unemployment line when I get there like I did '91-94 &'05 and entertain the masses once again.

New Times Best of Miami always hits it it on the nail. They did it again by choosing Joe Dert as the best Club DJ. Joe puts his heart and soul into his work. And it shows every time he performs.
