In the Magic City humidity, a Bacardi mojito is the ultimate refreshment. Why? Because besides mint, rum, and club soda, the concoction hosts some historic ingredients: a shot of old Havana, two dollops of romance, and a dash of the Malecón, all garnished with the roots of Cuba. If your Bacardi could talk about its 146-year-old distillery, you might not have time to drink it. Instead, open up Tom Gjelten’s new book, Bacardi and the Long Fight for Cuba, which tells the dramatic history of a business and its country.

This Wednesday night at 8, Gjelten, a National Public Radio correspondent, will read from his Bacardi Biography at Books & Books. Gjelten will discuss the Bacardi family’s origins in Cuba and its involvement in everything from Cuban independence from Spain to the rise of Fidel Castro, including the family’s eventual exile to Miami.

After this reading, you’ll never look at your mojito the same.
