A skinny 20-something kid is standing on the sidewalk with his back to the street, staring you down. His expression is hard to read the mouth is a tight slit and the eyes are tired, cold, and remote. He could be thinking about taking you home, robbing you, or killing you. Or maybe hes plotting all three in rapid succession. Whatever the case, theres no doubt the shirtless guy with the greasy hair and the words Eat Shit amateurishly tattooed on his right bicep is a bad boy. And its hard to stop staring back.
This photograph by recently deceased NYC artist, scenester, and druggy Dash Snow is the core of a summer group show called Boy, Oh Boy! thats showing at the Fredric Snitzer Gallery through August 25. I think that piece is what gave me the idea for the show because its ambiguous, Snitzer says. It could be macho, or it could be gay. In all, there are 21 artists tackling the straight, homosexual, criminal, and myriad other sides of maleness. Expect work from locals such as Hernan Bas and Diego Singh, internationals including Paul P and Kehinde Wiley, and even a few women Francie Bishop Good, Natalya Laskis, and Maria Martinez-Cañas.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10 a.m. Starts: July 15. Continues through Aug. 25, 2010
