Not to be confused with the chicken neck-wringing, mojo-flinging local sort, these santeros are artists who hail from the American Southwest. "I think this exhibit -- in a Miami context used to Afro-Cuban Santería -- is interesting, but these santeros create unusual work that has rarely been seen here," explains curator Elizabeth Cerejido of the Frost Art Museum's new show.
"The Saint Makers: A Living Tradition in American Folk Art," opening tonight at 8:00, features nearly 80 bultos and retablos from the Chuck and Jan Rosenak Collection, created by contemporary artists from New Mexico and Colorado. Influenced by European Baroque art and its religious iconography, the santero tradition dates to the 1700s and has evolved in modern times to depict quirky motifs such as Nicholas Herrera's sardonic interpretation of President Clinton's visitation by the Virgin Monica (left). "The space program isn't real, it's just a movie," a friend's mom once tried to tell us. We shook our heads and continue to make fun of her to this day. But for those who still believe that the moonwalks took place in the comfort of a Hollywood sound stage, the new IMAX 3-D film Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D will give them more fodder for their case. Presented and narrated by the less slobbery half of Turner & Hooch, Tom Hanks, the film melds previously unreleased NASA footage with CGI imaging and live-action renditions to put you on the moon right next to Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.
