Hurry! Get to the Redland quick. Kendall is sprawling southwestward with the parasitic speed typical of suburban species. Where there used to be dirt roads, now there are Walgreens. Where there used to be two-lane straightaways, now there are stop signs. Where there used to be tomato fields, now there are gated communities.
One place that's getting better with time, though, is the Fruit and Spice Park. Just recently, the park has added the brand-new Mango Café so you can enjoy the annual Redland Summer Fruit Festival from the air-conditioned comfort of its indoor climes. After a fresh Floribbean lunch, let your kids run loose in the park for face painting, a watermelon-eating contest, pony rides, sack races, and a mini fishpond. You can kick back and relax or hip-shake to the sounds of the South Florida Bluegrass Association. Then grab some lychee ice cream or a mango milkshake from a vendor, and marvel at the locally grown produce, rare fruits, Schnebly Redland's wine, and exotic plant life.
