Whenever egos and public monies are at stake, politicking, back-dealing, or just plain whoring colors the arts as strongly as a fresh tube of alizarin crimson. Miami’s dance community is no exception. But sometimes the negatives add up to a positive. Tonight’s performance by Ballet Gamonet/Maximum Dance Company marks Iliana Lopez’s return to the stage following a two-year absence. The retired Miami City Ballet star remained active in the dance community as ballet mistress for the MCB. She later worked with Jimmy Gamonet, whom she knew from his days as MCB’s acclaimed choreographer. Reunited, they will premiere his But I Never Saw Another Butterfly Again, which is set to Henryk Górecki’s Symphony No. 3, Opus 36. Two other Gamonet works are also scheduled. His signature piece, My Lady, pays homage to feminine power, while the ever-popular SUPERMEGATROID introduces swing-era numbers and steps to ballet’s formal landscape. A tango-influenced ballet by Dwight Rhoden closes the evening. Performances are tonight and tomorrow at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts, 174 E. Flagler St., Miami.
