Sexposé at World Erotic Art Museum is TEDx Meets Sex Ed

For most Americans, sex ed was an awkward, boredom-inducing experience. Instead of encouraging and explaining healthy sexuality, it was more likely to send youths into giggling fits or shame spirals.

But it's never too late to broaden those bedroom horizons. Next month, the first-ever Sexposé at the World Erotic Art Museum (WEAM) hopes to titillate audiences with a more in-depth and interesting look at the nature of sex and its many incarnations.

Hosted by Melissa Blundell Osorio, the first installment of Sexposé will cover myths about sex in the Orthodox Jewish community, how sexual imagery is used in advertising, and a talk from a pro dominatrix on the ins and outs (ha!) of sex work. The goal for each event is to have a speaker in each of three different categories: academic/artist, professional, and enlightening.

Osorio is the founder of Night School, which she describes as a Miami-based learning lab that offers classes and events to foster curiosity and build community for the intellectually adventurous.

"Our areas of purpose for the organization and this event specifically are education/learning, community, and fun/entertainment," she says of Night School. "This will be the first Sexposé, but the intention is that it will be a regular event. What really ties everything together and why I do the specific events I do is because I have a deep interest in human behavior, and Sexposé is no exception. The event explores human sexuality, its cultural impact, and the many ways that it intersects with different facets of our lives. So much of human behavior is in some way related to sex."

The admission fee is $69 (hahaha), and will include an open bar, light bites, admission to WEAM, and all of the presentations. The WEAM galleries will also be open throughout the evening, and people are encouraged to explore.

Osorio hopes to expand the roster of participants even further in Sexposé's future installments.

"It would be great if it could also provide a platform for people from less visible or marginalized groups to share their experiences or to spark discussions about sex workers rights, for example," she says.

"The event is a great opportunity for people to dress up, hang out in a sexy environment, and mingle with other intellectually curious people," Osorio says. "They can enjoy a drink, learn something interesting from the presentations, and explore the museum galleries. They can expect to turn on their brains and explore human sexuality in a fun and different way."

Upcoming Events

Having grown up feeling a lot of shame around sex (like most people), Osorio wanted to create an event that made the topic less taboo.

Sexposé kicks off on Saturday, October 24, at 1205 Washington Ave., Miami Beach. Admission is $69, with early bird discounts available, and you can purchase online through Eventbrite. The cost includes an open bar, light appetizers, museum admission (all galleries open throughout the night), and the presentations.
