When acclaimed choreographer Liam Scarlett teamed up with Miami City Ballet last year, the results were dazzling. The young prodigy, then just 25 years old and choreographing for Britain’s Royal Ballet, brought his original work Viscera to the Arsht Center (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami), where it was spectacularly performed by Jennifer Kronenberg and her real-life love, Carlos Miguel Guerra. The piece earned raves around the world.
Fans of that performance will want to head back to the Arsht this weekend for Scarlett’s return to Miami. This time, the choreographer presents Euphotic, capping off the lineup of performances in MCB’s Program II: Tradition and Innovation.
The “innovation” undoubtedly refers to Euphotic, which has been described as explosive and epic — not words often applied to the world of ballet. But there’s also something for old-school ballet fans: master works by George Balanchine and Marius Petipa.
