If all you know about prostitution is what you catch on HBOs Cathouse, honey, youve got so much more to learn. The premier cable channel program paints a colorful, fun portrait of the worlds oldest profession; between fulfilling male fantasies, the gals don bonnets, host tea parties, and seem to enjoy a sisterhood of sorts. But look at a country such as Cambodia and youll see how utterly devastating the industry can be. Filmmakers Guy Jacobson and Adi Ezroni have done just that with Holly, a movie that ventures into the teeming nations brothels to tell the story of the titular character, a 12-year-old Vietnamese girl sold by her family in order to earn a living in the infamous K11 village.
The gritty flick stars Ron Livingston (better known as lovable rebel-with-a-cause Peter from the cult classic Office Space) as an American card shark who finds a heart when he encounters the girl, whose virginity makes her a valued prize in the seamy biz. Holly doesnt sugarcoat the truth; it was notably filmed in what was once the prime vacation spot for pedophiles and sex tourists, and the cameras dont flinch from revealing the heartbreakingly sordid details of these young womens lives. The film premieres at 8 p.m. at the Cosford Cinema. Call 305-284-4861, and visit www.redlightchildren.com to learn more.
