Miami's been criticized way too much for our sense of style. Even though we're known for our Latin flavor, tourists still often get instant culture shock when they spot locals wearing barely there, second-skin-style dresses. South Florida is slowly making its way up the fashion food chain, though, with our burgeoning local street style and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim. We love to troll Miami International Fashion Week (MIFW) come March to see what's hot here and on the other side of the globe. But now we're taking it up a notch with the First Annual Miami Style Awards.

Tonight, the awards will take over the poolside at WET at the W Hotel South Beach at 7 p.m. What's more, it's co-hosted by MIFW founder Beth Sobol and fashion designer Julian Chang.

Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Albita will take the stage, too. The night honors two of the cast members of the Real Housewives of Miami: Lea Black and Alexia Echevarri. Will there be a camera crew? We don't know. But with top fashion designers and industry insiders honoring Real Housewives of Miami stars, celebrity emcee Elaine Lancaster, shoe designer Lisa Pliner, social and political activist Abigail Pollak, and beauty and fashion entrepreneur Loren Ridinger, there should be.

If that isn't enough name dropping for ya, food will be provided by Solea,

complimentary wine and champagne from 7 to 9 p.m., and the night's

festivities will include presentations by some of Miami's top designers

as well as a trunk show filled with jewelry and accessories.

Make sure you show up dressed to impress and with a wad of cash as tickets cost $75. But the ceremony is being held as a fundraiser for the Miami Fashion Week Foundation to raise money for student scholarships so that makes spending in the name of fashion OK, right?

First Annual Miami Style Awards, at 7pm, Thursday, October 7. Poolside at WET at the W Hotel South Beach. Tickets cost $75. Food provided by Solea, with silent auction and impromptu runway shows. After party starts at 11pm at WALL Lounge. Visit MiamiFashionWeek.com
