With everyone here in transit or on a seemingly permanent mental vacation, Miami abounds with weird, sad, and funny stories. Unfortunately, by simply eavesdropping, you dont get the full deal. Why is that lady a bitch, or why is that person on the cell phone crying? Luckily, Lip Service lets you buy a ticket to be brazenly nosy. Local writers anyone with the ability tell a tale, not just the pros share their own stories, in their own words. Told in the first person and all true, they range from the witty to the enlightening to the just plain scandalous. At the last event, a FedEx delivery man relayed how he was hotly pursued by an amorous, older Hialeah housewife who was eventually struck down by a bad Miami driver.
The local Lip Service affiliate has been busy lately, putting on a series of events in conjunction with local radio programs and live venues. Past editions have teamed up with WLRNs Under the Sun, and this Saturdays edition at Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre comes as part of FUNDartes Out in the Tropics festival. The fest is a series of LGBT events, but this edition of Lip Service has no theme, and everyone is welcome with open arms and ears. The deadline for story submissions has passed, but you can still indulge your passion for gut spilling by buying a ticket and listening. The afterparty is free and kicks off at 10 p.m. at nearby Books & Books (265 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables).
