Jackie Robinson’s birthday is to be honored in a great way thanks to Urgent Inc. The nonprofit Miami-based youth and community development organization is celebrating the birth of one of baseball’s greatest players by revitalizing Overtown with cool artwork.
Volunteers are requested to join Urgent Inc. to paint murals during Community Paint Day. Overtown and the neighborhood’s crown jewel, Dorsey Park (1775 NW First Place Miami), are to be beautified in the most hands-on way. The park is a must-see if you’re looking to soak up local civil rights history. Fun fact: Dorsey Park was the only field where the Negro Baseball League was allowed to play. Community Paint Day is meant to be not only a day of fun but also an embodiment of the principles of Urgent Inc., which are to teach Miami’s youth to become the agents of social change for their community.
Only 100 volunteers are needed for this project, so if you want to help improve Miami and give a new look to an historical area, act quickly. Register at urgentinc.org and head out to Dorsey Park this Friday. The painting commences at 11 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. Call or email Emily Gunter at 305-915-3195 or [email protected].
