The Roots is undeniably one of the most celebrated music collectives on late-night television. We’ll even go as far as to say the Philadelphia-based group is one of the most celebrated collectives in music, period. Since its inception in the late ’80s, cofounders Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson have produced some of the most influential, socially conscious hip-hop the world has ever heard. But for every track they’ve created, they’ve drawn inspiration from a wide range of predecessors. Questlove is not only a brilliant musician but also a master encyclopedia of his profession. On Friday, equipped with an arsenal of fresh tracks spanning several decades, Questo will throw down a DJ set at Bardot (3456 N. Miami Ave., Miami). But it won’t be his first rodeo. About two years ago, Brother Quest spun MP3s at Bardot’s Art Basel closing party. Mixing a blend of ’90s hip-hop, ’70s rock, and ’60s soul, the DJ was all smiles until several folks blatantly ignored the bar’s no-cameras policy and blinded him with iPhone flashes. “The light is really bright,” Questo told the crowd. “I want you all to dance, not take photos and shit.”
