Killed It In France

Call us shallow, but our desire for Miami City Ballet only really flared up after news that the troupe was garnering standing ovations in Paris. Our hometown pirouetters, under the direction of Edward Villella, recently spent three weeks in Europe for the Les Etés de Danse Festival, performing 14 ballets at Paris’s Théâtre du Châtelet. Crowds and critics went wild. London’s Financial Times went as far as to say MCB’s “exuberance and faith in the steps are infectious, and theirs is an all-American musicality that sheds new light on ballets that have grown formulaic and dull on this side of the Atlantic.” See what all the French fuss was about during two free showings of the new PBS television program Great Performances: Miami City Ballet Dances Balanchine & Tharp at the Miami City Ballet’s Studio Theater. The company will perform George Balanchine’s “Square Dance” and “Western Symphony,” as well as Twyla Tharp’s “The Golden Section” (music by David Byrne).
