Jen Stark Exhibits in Thailand, Opens New Show at Carol Jazzar Tonight
Miami artists Jen Stark and Alvaro Ilizarbe (AKA Freegums) were recently flown to Bang Khun Thian, a town just outside of Bangkok, Thailand, to participate in an exhibit titled "Free Size." (About that name, clothes in Thailand are often one-size-fits-all, or free-size, as a cost-saving measure.) Set in the Sinudom Silk Screen factory, the show was curated by a friend of Stark's - Logan Bay - who currently lives in Bangkok. It was funded by a grant through apexart's "Franchise" program, which accepts proposals for art projects set in unexpected small cities. "Free Size," which was selected out of a pool of 250 international proposals, wanted to commander an industrial space like the silk screen factory and transform it into a productive, creative space through an artist residency program.
Stark and Ilizarbe spent a week in the factory, and their work was on display until mid-April. Ilizarbe, who's art recently covered the walls of Miami's Bar, created a graphic mural of black-and-white intertwined snakes, and Stark, a New Times MasterMind award winner, made a brightly-colored fabric installation (upper right) reminiscent of dripping paint.
In the below video, see the Miami artists at work in the Thai factory. Stark comes in at the two-minute mark:

in the silk screen factory wisely; they designed a series of tote bags
printed on Thai canvas. You can nab one online ($30) or tonight, you'll
have a chance to buy an arted up tote from the artists in person at the
opening of Stark's new show.
From May 14 to June 13, Stark will have four sculptures up at the Carol
Jazzar Gallery for a show with British artist Rory MacArthur that
celebrates 3-D art. Expect Stark's signature playfulness with pop art,
optical illusions, and color-burst cyclones such as Sunken Sediment
After the Jazzar exhibit closes, Stark will take some time off to spend
the summer traveling before she hunkers down to start projects for Art
Basel, now just six months away.
"Jen Stark/Rory MacArthur" opens tonight, May 14 from 7 to 11 p.m., and runs until June 13. Opening night after party at Bar, 28 NE 14th St. Carol Jazzar is located at 158 NW 91st St., Miami. Visit www.cjazzart.com
