On the cover of a 1992 issue, the Weekly World News featured the image of a newly discovered form of cryptid. Little did they know, the strange creature would quickly develop a strong following. Bat Boy was such an instant sensation that budding cryptozoologists were quick to fill the publication with new findings for hungry fans. His face was soon plastered on T-shirts; a comic strip was created to document The Adventures of Bat Boy; and he was even made the star of a backwoods, Romeo and Juliet-like tragedy, Bat Boy: The Musical. The plot follows a fictionalized account of the half-bat/half-boy's discovery in West Virginia and his subsequent struggles in demanding acceptance from the townspeople. Bat Boy hangs in there today through October 30 at Broward Community College's Bailey Hall (Bldg. 6, 3501 SW Davie Rd., Davie). Tickets costs $10; tonight's opening tickets cost $20. Tropical Park will be jamming as Descemer Bueno and Siete Rayo take the stage in the first of Miami-Dade Park and Recreation's new concert series, Noches Tropicales. The free concerts, beginning tonight in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, will combine two of the best reasons for living in Miami: wonderful weather and eclectic music. As the trees sway in warm breezes, you will move to the rhythms of calypso, cumbia, reggae, hip-hop, rumba, and jazz. Founded by Descemer Bueno, formerly of the band Yerba Buena, Siete Rayo will have you leaping out of your lawn chair and using every step in your Latin dance repertoire. So go ahead, bring a chair or even a blanket, but you're unlikely to use either. Songs like "El Train," "Vamo' a Celebrar," and "Mueve" will keep you on your feet tonight. Paul Jacobs, who is faculty chair of the organ department at Juilliard, has received many accolades, including "best organist in the country." Indeed, few who have witnessed this boy wonder perform — he's only 28 — have walked away unimpressed. He knows most material by Brahms, Franck, Duruflé, and Messiaen by memory, but his flashiest claim to fame is performing the complete works of Bach in one eighteen-hour sitting. Today's 3:00 performance at the Miami Beach Community Church (1620 Drexel Ave., Miami Beach) will be a much shorter and enjoyable sampling of Bach, Reger, Widor, and Duruflé. Will this setting, which evokes more South Pacific than European church, awaken a little tropical flavor in Jacobs? Just don't bring any possessed tiki idols. Tickets cost ten dollars.
