Grab your partner, swing 'em 'round and bring 'em to the Barnacle Historic State Park (3485 Main Hwy., Miami) for a hoedown. Pack a picnic, your best twirling skirts, and dancing shoes and do-si-do the night away. What's that you say? You can't dance? No problem. Instructors will be thrilled to teach you the moves to traditional contras, squares, circles, and waltzes. Rae Newoman will be calling the steps as you shimmy to the tunes of the Flying Turtles. In Trinidad and Tobago a successful church fundraiser unites the diverse culture by including both barbecue and the Indo-Caribbean feast known as a curry-que. Today from noon until 5:00, come to Christ the King Catholic Church (16000 SW 112th Ave., Miami) for a culinary treat. Besides the typical offerings of grilled chicken, potato salad, coleslaw, and other delights that are available at Shorty's or Tony Roma's, you can savor roti, a meal that is as popular in the Caribbean as pizza is in America. Delectably soft flatbread is served with spicy saffron-colored chicken, potatoes, and dark, succulent mango. Try pholourie, deep-fried balls of golden dough made for dipping into spicy-sweet chutney. Just because this golf tournament benefits the United Way's Helping Children Succeed Fund, which is serious stuff, doesn't mean it's devoid of a few winks and grins. Among the contest's less than typical takes: a "crookedest drive" honor; Bermuda Triangle (which replaces the traditional longest drive); and, as a hole-in-one prize, a car that runs on a mix of fuels (a hybrid, that is). Golfers -- who will receive lunch and dinner, custom sunglasses, and more -- can also acquire stuff (including a luxury cruise for two for closest-to-the-pin) via an auction and a raffle. Of course the real reason to enter Swing for the Kids is to contribute to a good cause, but fun should never get in the way of that.
