Nothing says Hispanic culture like old-timers in guayaberas playing dominoes under a thick cloud of cigar smoke. Throw in some Hispanic folk music, paella, and other Latino delicacies, and you have a certified celebration. Now you just need a reason to celebrate. Luckily, it’s Hispanic Heritage Month, and that’s more than enough excuse for this Saturday’s inaugural Gables Hispanic Cultural Festival. The fest celebrates Cuban artist Cundo Bermúdez, founding member of Cuba’s Association of Painters and Sculptors, who died in 2008. “He was like the Picasso of Cuban art,” says festival founder Emilio Sauma Jr., who worked with Bermúdez for more than a decade. The late artist’s estate permitted the festival to use one of his paintings in the poster. And his last piece, a colorful ten-by-seven-foot mural, will be re-created inside Coral Gables City Hall during the festival. Expect multiple bounce houses for kids, exhibits from Hispanic artists, and a VIP cigar section.
