Great Find: Modern Old Fans from En Avance

Great Find: Modern Old Fans from En Avance

Miami may be one of the vainest cities in the country -- but at least we look good doing it. In that spirit, we're indulging our love of the superficial by spotlighting fashion finds in the 305.

The Find: A Spanish style hand fan, or abanico, available in a clean, modern palate of black, tan, or silver (as shown) or in a variety of classic laces by small, independent Spanish brand Morenita.

The Shop: Two years ago, En Avance moved into the calm, curated oasis of the Design District, right down the block from Sra. Martinez and across from Thomas Maier. Somewhere between those jamon serrano and queso manchego croquetas and the Bottega Veneta digs is the perfect place for a blast from the past of the most practical kind in this city -- a hand fan. An accessory with a purpose.

The Reason:

Upcoming Events

If you own a necklace or a bracelet, then you should own a fan. It can

do more than either of those, practically speaking -- it is an object designed to cool you down in this tropical climate. Plus, you can bust

some sweet dance moves with it at the club. Added bonus: You can hold it right under your eyes for that Zorro-esque mysterious

woman look.

The Cost: $345-$395. (In this economy, you ask? It's obscene, we admit. But we're more taken with the idea of the hand fan than these specific examples; try hitting up an antique shop for more affordable versions.)

The Style:

This is an only-in-Miami style anomaly; you may not be seeing a trend

like this on the runways. It's long been a favorite prop for

spreads in magazines, but the hand fan isn't about being on trend, it's

about tapping into something timeless and using a little imagination.

At weddings in the summer, cheap Oriental Trade versions of abanicos

are party gifts for guests to cool themselves off. How much more awesome would it be if you had your own? When people ask, you can say "oh, it's from a small company in Spain," sounding all traveled and cultured and stuff. Never mind that it's

available right here in Miami; they'll have to boutique hunt for their

own great find.

There's

also something appealing about styling this in the opposite of a

wedding look. Let it hang from your clutch for a night out to

dinner al fresco in dark jeans or a tight mini and smokey eyes. Or perhaps with a

contemporary suit, Stella McCartney style, with straight clean lines for

an oh la la look. If there's one thing you can count on with an accessory like this, it's attention -- so work on those flamenco moves.
