Five Ways to Get Cast on The Price Is Right This Weekend

Despite the retirement of everyone's favorite TV host slash spay-and-neuter advocate Bob Barker, The Price Is Right has maintained its audience of rabidly enthusiastic fans and contestants. Under funnyman Drew Carey, it's still the longest running game show in history and daytime's #1 -- a TV phenomenon.
And if you're a whiz at Grocery Game, Plinko or Hi Lo, you're in luck - the game show is hosting an open casting call at The Village of Gulfstream Park this weekend. We spoke to the show's casting guru, Stan Blits, for some tips on how to earn a place on that iconic stage. So come on down, South Florida!
While Blits won't be on site at the local casting, he watches all the video clips - and does the daily casting at the Los Angeles studio. "I sit there with a bucket of popcorn and a notepad and play the DVD," he says.
He's seen thousands and thousands and thousands of contestants, so he knows what works -- and what doesn't. The stakes are high, because two semi-finalists from South Florida will be flown to Los Angeles, and one of the two is guaranteed a spot on contestants' row.
Here's what Blits had to say:
5. Don't hold back.
One or two word answers are not the way to go. Use up your entire 30 seconds. Gush! Enthuse! Chatter! "Don't make your answers short," Blits says. "Do a lot of talking, as much as you can get in there. Tell 'em as much as you can about why you love the show. Give me your all!"
4. No sob stories.
"A lot of people tell me their tragedies - I just lost my job, my mother has cancer, etc. It's not your time to purge all your problems or to make me feel sorry for you. The sympathy angle doesn't work," Blits says. This is a happy show - hello!
3. Keep up with Stan.
He's got energy for days. And contestants that can match it are off to a good start. While you won't see him in person at the casting call, staying energetic for the duration of your video clip is a must. "People will initially be excited, but because I have a lot of energy myself, I jump around like a court jester," Blits says. "Most people can deliver for a few seconds and then they slowly taper off. If their energy equals mine or exceeds or maintains it, they have a really good chance." Basically, high energy FTW.
2. Be yourself. Don't fake it - they'll know.
"A lot of enthusiasm and sincerity is critical," Blits says. "I don't want you to be faking, jumping up and down to make it look like you're happy." And if you're naturally hilarious, that's a plus. Because bantering with Drew Carey is the best thing ever.
1. BE HAPPY.
"The thing that always hooks me, to start, is to be joyful. Just smile and be happy from the second you're up there till the second you leave. There's nothing worse than looking like your family died." And being happy means smiling. "Smile. For God's sake, keep smiling! That's number one."
The casting call runs this Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. at Gulfstream Casino. All applicants must be 18 and over. Check out the Price Is Right website for more details.
