Feet of Fury

James Devine is listed in the Guinness World Records book as the world’s fastest tapper, able to pound out 38 taps per second. Try tapping your fingers 38 times in a second, right now. Not so easy, right? Devine doing his thing is a little more exciting than you rattling your fingers around on a desk. He’s the star of Tapeire: Driven by Rhythm, a hybrid-funk performance piece with Celtic music, storytelling, and Devine dancing his ass off. Catch it today at the Carnival Center’s Studio Theater.

Devine got his start doing the Irish jig with Michael Flatley in Lord of the Dance. Now that every person in Middle America has seen that show, he’s out on his own, dancing solo and sharing the stage with a merry band of musicians who accompany him on the “grunge fiddle” and other amalgamations of Irish music. Of course, when you can pop off 38 taps a second, you could probably fill a stage by yourself. Showtime is 2 p.m., and tickets cost $25. Call 305-949-6722, or visit www.carnivalcenter.org. And check out www.tapeire.com.
