If Crosstown Rebels honcho Damian Lazarus is playing in Miami, it’s most likely taking place somewhere downtown. Probably at Electric Pickle or Space, where his forward-thinking sets are welcome with open arms. Lazarus doesn’t play to appeal to the Top 40 crowd, so you probably won’t hear the David Guetta remix of Rihanna’s “You da One” featuring LMFAO. (We totally made that up, so don’t go searching for it.) That’s just not the British DJ-producer’s style.
You go to a Lazarus set with open ears, hoping to receive a musical education. That’s why Thursday’s booking at Mansion is an odd choice of venue. We hope South Beach denizens can leave their blasé attitudes at home and really embrace Lazarus’s “moving the genre forward” mantra. Because there are only so many times you can listen to the Wanted’s “Glad You Came” as sparklers announce the arrival of your next bottle.
Even the jaded downtown crowd shouldn’t miss the chance to catch Lazarus whip Mansion’s sound system and lights into a frenzy.
