Remember that crazy newspaper photo taken in the Everglades of an alligator clawing its way out from the inside of someone’s escaped pet python? In addition to being, like, totally the craziest thing you’ve ever seen, that was also probably a sign that something is terribly awry in what is one of the world’s most unique — and most vulnerable — ecosystems. That’s where the fourth annual Everglades Awareness Benefit Concert comes in, uniting a practically endless list of musical artists, spoken word performers, visual artists, activists, and speakers to raise awareness and help conserve this critically challenged environment.

An extravaganza on three stages, the show is a welcome change of pace from a nightlife scene known more for conspicuous consumption than social responsibility. So leave your Hummer at home and take the Metromover to Tobacco Road tonight from 4:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. Admission is ten dollars — a small price to pay to keep the alligators out of your pool. For more info, visit www.tobacco-road.com, or www.myspace.com/evergladesawareness.
Sat., March 24, 4 p.m.-3 a.m.
