Art’s healing power is the subject of a contest conducted by Gilda’s Club Worldwide to help colorectal cancer survivors find courage in their creativity. “Snapshot of Survival,” an exhibit traveling from Miami to Seattle to Buffalo, is highlighted by the first-place work of North Miami Beach resident Susan Lazarus, whose winning entry, Bright Future, reflects the inspiration she discovered within herself while recovering from the illness. This morning at 10:30, Lazarus will unveil her opus at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (1475 NW 12th Ave., D-1, Miami), where researchers believe expression through art is an important part of the healing process. Miami art doyenne Barbara Gillman celebrates her 28th anniversary in the business at a new space in the Design District (4141 NE Second Ave., #202, Miami), with a charity art sale to benefit New Orleans children affected by Hurricane Katrina. A percentage of the proceeds are slated for the West Bank Boys and Girls Club and the Greater New Orleans After-School Program. Since 1979, Gillman’s gallery has exhibited some of the nation’s most influential artists, including Andy Warhol, James Rosenquist, Andres Serrano, and Nam June Paik.
