Miami for years has been handcuffed to shifting musical identities from Miami Sound Machine in the 80s, to our uncles Luke and Al in the 90s, to foreign invaders such as Will Smith and LMFAO, not to mention a stockpile of generic salsa tunes used by directors who seem to know the city only from watching each others lame-ass movies. These days, though, anyone who wants to find Miamis heart and soul should look to a growing number of fusion bands mixing jazz, Latin, hip-hop, funk, and all kinds of subgenres absorbed over the years.
This Friday, two of our biggest homegrown fusion successes, ArtOfficial and ¡Mayday!, will perform at the Tina Hills Pavilion at Bayfront Park for this months DWNTWN Miami Concert Series. Between the two, theyve shared stages with legends such as KRS-One and Daft Punk, collaborated with industry giants such as Cee-Lo Green, won a Florida Grammy Showcase, and been featured on the HBO series Entourage. The show opens with Cris Cab at 5:30 p.m.
