A Community United

Despite the undeniable presence of Haitian immigrants, the community tends to celebrate its rich culture at disparate locations scattered throughout the city. Unity is the goal behind the first annual Haitian Art and Films festival. Today through December 29, island-culture lovers are invited to the Tower Theater for music, art, and films fresh from Port-au-Prince. The event is being organized by Miami Dade College and the nonprofit Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance. The films range from children’s matinees to provocative island documentaries like Un Certain Bord de Mer, which reveals the untold story of Haiti’s Arab community. An exhibition of Francesca Lalanne’s vibrant, thoughtful artwork will open Saturday, December 16, and the festival begins with a fundraising concert featuring handsome, husky-voiced singer-songwriter Luck Mervil. His Kreyol crooning will delight Miamians tonight at 8:00. Tickets to the fundraising opening concert cost $50; all other events are free. Call event coordinator Lorraine Silvera at 786-267-0458, or visit www.haitianalliance.org for ticket information.
