You’ve come a long way, nerd baby. Back in the day, the word “nerd” was a death sentence for your social life; it conjured images of Screech from Saved by the Bell and the pathetically undatable Poindexter in the popular yet regrettable board game Girl Talk. Even the Revenge of the Nerds movies, which purported to give a voice to the tragically geeky, mocked the stereotypes of the thick-lensed, pocket-protected characters. OK, so they were computer science majors, but at least they weren’t as awful as the Alpha Beta frat bros.
But now Florida nerds are finally getting their due. Florida Supercon, the annual convention of all geek culture, has outgrown its former location at the Miami Airport Convention Center and moved across the bay to gigantic new digs at the Miami Beach Convention Center (1901 Convention Center Dr., Miami Beach). That’s the same building that houses some of the biggest events in town, including Art Basel and the Miami International Boat Show. Congrats to all of those artists formerly known as dweebs: You have officially arrived.
This year’s Supercon brings some of pop culture’s biggest names to the Beach, including cast members from HBO’s Game of Thrones; Dan Harmon, creator of the cult sitcom Community; and WWE wrestler Jerry “the King” Lawler. The festivities promise to satisfy any nerdy itch you have, from comic books and cosplay to videogames, anime, sci-fi, fantasy, and more.
