There’s nothing blasé about ballet when Justin Peck and Sufjan Stevens are at the helm. Following the success of Everywhere We Go, a nine-piece orchestration of ballet dancers and bold, dramatic piano ballads that premiered in May at the New York City Ballet, the choreographer/ballet soloist (Peck) and his singer/songwriter/musician partner (Stevens) will be in Miami this Thursday for the next YoungArts Salon series, when they will discuss the secrets to a perfectly harmonious partnership in “The Art of Collaboration.”
Together, the two master the art of theatrical juxtaposition; Peck intertwines the fluidity of classical ballet with sharp hints of modern dance, while Stevens, who’s been featured on Billboard’s Top charts, infuses the musically dramatic into his characteristic melodic sounds. The duo first joined forces in 2012, when Peck choreographed a ballet production to the classically reinterpreted score of Sufjan’s 2002 electronica album, Enjoy Your Rabbit, and enjoyed the collaboration enough to start the process over again two years later.
You won’t see Peck launch into a grand jeté at the event, which will begin at 6 p.m. at the YoungArts Campus (2100 Biscayne Blvd., Miami); however, you might learn the secrets to a truly creative and electric partnership in an intimate conversation between the two.
