Now in its 19th year, City Theatre’s annual Summer Shorts festival of ten-minute plays has shed any pretense of gravitas. No more, it seems, will cerebral tragedies sneak into its calibrated mix of quick-witted, sketch-like shorts: The festival is billing itself as a producer of “the funniest short comedies in America.” Each year, it feels more and more like Saturday Night Live, with the important question being, will it be SNL circa 1979, 1994, or 2013? These are big differences, but some of the titles alone on this year’s ten-play docket indicate the hilarity will arrive quickly and often. Steve Yockey’s world premiere Joshua Consumed an Unfortunate Pear has a title Edward Gorey would have loved; Dan Castellaneta and Deb Lacusta’s Shock and Aww will probably have a character dressed us a cat; and Holli Harms’ Make John Patrick Shanley Go Home will likely contain enough inside-theater humor for a play thrice its length. We’ll also be treated to My Husband, another entry in humorist Paul Rudnick’s Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays; perhaps the only Holocaust-related comedy you’ll see onstage, It’s the Jews; and a revival of The Scottish Play, the geopolitical masterpiece that New World graduate Theo Reyna wrote for Mad Cat Theatre Company’s Mixtape 2 earlier this year.
Wednesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 4 p.m. Starts: June 12. Continues through July 6, 2014
