Pong. For gamers of a certain age, the word brings back memories of two-tone, two-dimensional graphics and hours spent at the arcade. But for today's whippersnappers, there's just one kind of pong: beer pong.
But you don't have to be a young gun to appreciate the Miami Heat. So this weekend's New Times event at Whiskey Joe's, combining a beer pong tournament and a Miami Heat Game Six Watch Party, is pretty perfect no matter who you are.
If you grew up playing Pong the video game, you know that it has a few things in common with its brewsky cousin. Both feature bouncing balls. Both are highly addictive in nature. And it's easy to get competitive about each one. But unlike the video game, where the best you can hope for is a spot for your three initials at the top of the leaderboard, New Times' Beer Pong Tournament offers the chance to win cold, hard cash.
Beer pong teams of two players each have the chance to take home $500. But even if you don't beat the competition, you're still a winner. Pabst Blue Ribbon is providing the beer, and the competition plays out at Whiskey Joe's (3301 Rickenbacker Cswy., Key Biscayne), with one of the city's best views.
Registration costs $10 per player, and the tournament starts at 7 p.m. Visit bit.ly/beerpongMAY.
Meanwhile, if you just want to watch LeBron, Wade, and Veloci-Bosh do their thing on the court, you can skip the pong altogether and head straight to the watch party specials. Whiskey Joe's will be serving 50-cent wings for the occasion, as well as whiskey sours for $5.50.
So you can go big, go pong, and of course -- GO HEAT!
