Spike Lee Is a Hypocrite

It took an incident close to home for Spike Lee, the Do the Right Thing director, to see the reality facing African-American neighborhoods across the country. During a Black History Month lecture recently, he grumbled about his dad being harassed by new white neighbors for playing music too loudly.

Spike should have been fighting for Brooklyn when he was considered one of the top moviemakers in the game.

"He bought a house in nineteen-motherfuckin'-sixty-eight, and the motherfuckin' people moved in last year and called the cops on my father," Lee told a cheering audience at Brooklyn's Pratt Institute. "We bought the motherfuckin' house in nineteen-sixty-motherfuckin'-eight, and now you call the cops? In 2013? Get the fuck outta here!"

For a guy who loved to criticize me for using foul language in my lyrics, Spike sure has a potty mouth. But where was Spike before these "motherfucking people" moved in? He was going to froufrou parties on Madison Avenue, sitting courtside at Madison Square Garden, and playing the role of the big-time Hollywood director.

Now that his career is falling off, he wants to be outspoken about gentrification and how it erases historic black neighborhoods. Spike should have been fighting for Brooklyn when he was considered one of the top moviemakers in the game.

Sitting around complaining after the neighborhood is overrun with hipsters is not going to fix anything. That's why I write this column, to get involved in politics. I also volunteer as an inner-city high school coach. I'm not going to sit back and watch developers come into Overtown, West Coconut Grove, or Liberty City to create the next Brickell Avenue by forcing out families and mom-and-pop businesses that have been in the neighborhood for half a century.

I'm going help my people stay where they belong.

Maybe Lee should take the money he makes from his 9,000-square-foot Manhattan mansion (it's on the market for $32 million) and build some affordable housing for the families who were priced out of Brooklyn. Or at least he should buy out his dad's neighbors. Then he can say he did the right thing.

................it not HATE its focus on HYPOCRACY

most if not ALL white people saw TAWANA BRAWLEY a liar and put up to it by REV SHARPTON who always too conveniently had a ready made public spectacleto preside over - it was just too obvious that this fat buffoon was power-hungry and egotistical

same with spike lee - too obvious - and at a time everyone was afraid to say so, EXCEPT a few like howard stern and as white people we basically paid lee off and he took the cash, as did tyson and ali and jackson (only ALI used his fortune well) et al so now they have a BLACK president and everything is going their way - for now

that's NOT hate only a warning - nobless oblige - now BLACK america has a responsibility to get positive results without excuses and BS and kids having kids and being unemployable and costing taxpayer funds - we got hispanics that can make BLACKs obsolete and irrelevant and economically redundant = period

wow, luke indirectly admits in his column that he has something in common with spike....neither likes white people and they don't want white  people as neighbors......I wonder if i wrote that what would happen?  in the quest to fight racism, blacks have become more of that themselves....know wonder every single black community in america is but a slum.....instead of vouching for "say no to drugs" and focusing on excelling in academia.....these so called "black leaders" hustle their own race for their own greed and then rouse their people that it's the white mans fault and society's fault for "what has happened to you".....to luke and spike....go f@ck yourselves losers.....

Campbell: "I'm going help my people stay where they belong."

This is what I don't understand about Campbell and "his people"....why would they want to stay in the same crappy place where they have always lived?  Why wouldn't they want to move out and/or move up?  Why wouldn't they aspire to improve their situation in life?  Why wouldn't they want to live on Brickell, or in Gables by the Sea or Star Island?  Why isn't Campbell encouraging "his people" to be ambitious?  Instead he wants "his people" to just stay where they are.  Sounds like he doesn't like "his people".

@muchojunkhere

You're so naive to believe you're not.  It's ok though, you can still mark "white" on applications although you're skin tone can pass for shit color.  No need to tap into any "intelligence" when dealing with loser rappers like Campbell and the likes of him like yourself.  I'm sure the Miami New Times would hire you on the spot after only one question, an empty resume, a GED and multiple tattoos.  Do me a favor though, pull up your pants, you're dirty boxers are an interest to no one.
