If you know Amy Schumer only from her appearances on Comedy Central roasts or her fifth-place finish on NBC’s Last Comic Standing several years ago, you’re missing out. Schumer is funny in those settings, sure. But her complex and unforgiving comedic sensibilities really shine in Inside Amy Schumer, the comedy sketch series she launched on Comedy Central last year.
In it, Schumer blends adjectives that seem like opposites: She’s politically incorrect and brazenly feminist; she’s self--deprecating and simultaneously self--aggrandizing; she’s both the author and the object of her jokes. In sketch after sketch, Schumer plays what she calls “heightened versions” of herself, from a meth lab junkie perpetually blowing herself up, to a would--be porn actress who can’t find a co-star, to an otherwise average girl who happens to be excruciatingly bad at sexting (sample text: “I wanna hug your penis”).
Between sketches, Schumer shows off her knack for making others open up about their uncomfortable secrets in man--on--the--street Q&A segments and lengthier interviews. So prepare to divulge your inner demons when she brings her Inside Amy Schumer’s Back Door Tour to the Adrienne Arsht Center (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) this Tuesday at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $37.50 to $45.
