Black Men Hate Scandal, Women Love It

Black women across America are jonesing for the return of Scandal, a hit TV show on ABC about a hot, intelligent, African-American lady who has a love affair with the president of the United States. But it's not Obama. This fictional leader of the free world happens to be a good-looking white guy. The show's twist is that the main character, Olivia Pope, played by Kerry Washington, makes her living helping the Washington power elite hide dirty laundry. She juggles other relationships with successful men while getting it on with the commander in chief.

Black women are essentially rooting for a ho who slept her way to the top.

Set for a February 27 midseason return, Scandal is pretty much the first network TV drama featuring a black female character since Get Christie Love!, a blaxploitation series in 1974 that starred Teresa Graves. She was best-known for her catch phrase, "You're under arrest, sugar!" Scandal is the brainchild of Shonda Rhimes, one of the only prominent African-American black female executive producers in Hollywood. She also created Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice.

Scandal's black female audience loves Pope because she is a powerful, confident woman of color who has white dudes eating from the palm of her hand. What black women fail to realize is there is a subliminal reason they can't get enough of Scandal. Playing the role of a white man's side honey has been around since slavery, when plantation owners would rape black female slaves. Over time, the masters would grant their slave concubines special privileges and have mixed children who became the house Negroes.

C. Stiles

Pope's character sold her sex appeal to rise to power and to appease her mostly white clients, including the president. Black women are essentially rooting for a ho who slept her way to the top. And that's why black men hate Scandal.

Black men have a problem with the show because we always hear black women talking shit about successful African-American celebrities who marry pretty blonds. Black men find it hypocritical when a black woman disses Tiger Woods or Charles Barkley for having relationships with white women.

One thing is for sure. Black men and women can't wait to see what Pope does next.

LOL! This is one of the most ignorant articles I have ever read. Really? So when black women date and marry white men, it's time for a history lesson, right? But when a black man screws and dates white women, it's "getting back at da man!" Please do have several seats Mr. Campbell. When I'm with my white male boyfriend; the last thing on my mind is a hating a** black man. LOL! I can't with these Kneegrows these days.....smh.

Guess "Scandal" provides a "back at 'ya!" moment for black women.  Black men who bang around with white women all the while worshiping them as goddesses or behaving like white women's sex toys debase themselves.  Scandal is a fictional show its not real.  The TV has many women & men who sleep their way to the top.  Tell us Luther Campbell what's really bothering you?

"With Black women being street harassed, raped, beaten and murdered by Black men at a rate White men no longer match post-Reconstruction through post-segregation"  If a white man says this he is racist, if a black man says this he is an uncle tom...At least you admit the problems facing your community that white man can't do anything about.. I really appreciate this post trudy, at least i know you dont believe ALL your lies. I guess this means you are giving in to white supremacy when you admit the truth... really appreciate that post, very well contructed

Welp, you can't really expect logic from a man whose albums include songs like, "Freaky Bitches" "T.K. The Pussyologist" and "Dick in Ya Mouth"...typical.

This is yet again another sloppy, lazy analysis of Scandal and its fans. First of all it dominates the 18-49 year old demographic in its time slot. Thus, it means that more than only Black women are watching the show. Second, there is more to the story than the relationship that you write about in a blandly sexist, misogynoiristic way. There's multiple plots, strong characters and compelling writing by one of the most talented Black women writers, in television, Shonda Rhimes. There are many storylines regularly discussed and written about that are purposely ignored by Black men who do not even watch the show. Third, within the show that you clearly do not watch, "Olivia Pope's" character has dated primarily Black men (until her complicated, more than sex, actually involves love albeit also trouble, like most human relationships, relationship with the White President) until that point. Her Black father is the one who destroyed her engagement with a Black man she dated for years. Black men who know absolutely nothing about the show know nothing of this storyline or the nuances in her romantic choices. Fourth, it is ignorant, lazy and offensive to juxtapose slavery and rape to agency and choice in choosing a partner today. Black men marry White women at 3X the rate that Black women marry White men. This has plenty to do with how White supremacy, Eurocentric beauty myths and anti-Black misogyny shape the heterosexual Black male gaze. However, Black men have not always had sexual agency over their bodies either. Whether plantation mistresses or White women claiming rape and leading Black men to being lynched by White men, Black men's sexual agency was not always a free for all despite having male privilege. Even so, I would not say that an interracial relationship with a Black man and White woman today immediately reflects oppression or Black men being lynched. Yet you lazily do so because you don't know your own history. Finally, let's cut the crap. With Black women being street harassed, raped, beaten and murdered by Black men at a rate White men no longer match post-Reconstruction through post-segregation, it is disingenuous to pretend that Black men are so deeply worried about Black women's images when they regularly affirm stereotypes about Black women whether laughing at Medea or in music or in their comedy. The bottom line is Black women's sexuality is incorrectly deemed the property of Black men. By us having agency and rejecting this notion, Black men are offended. And the offense itself is not even sincere. If so, where was the outrage over HawthoRNe or Californication? Both involved Black women in sexual relationships with non-Black men, even as they were not in romantic relationships with those men. The issue is that Scandal has captured a White audience, and Black men fear White approval of anything that Black women also like and thereby seek to pathologize our choices. Because those former two shows did not have the social media power and cultural relevance of Scandal, the Black women who watched both were not attacked. This is about controlling our choices and in a hypocritical way that favors male privilege. It's sloppy and lazy and more transparent than Saran Wrap. Spare me.

@stephanieparrott1 Exactly, and he wants black women to stay around for "the black man's" disposal, so that the sexual abuse that he has been promoting in his music for years; can continue. No thanks! Most of us (black women), are done being your mules, sex slaves, banks and baby making machines.

@Trudy  Fine words. But there is nothing that complex about black self hatred or the show Scandal. I will agree with your assessment of the powerlessness of black men in regards to our own sexuality. Both black men and black women as throughout history are  being used as modern studs and concubines. Neither of us is looking too fancy right about now. It is unfortunate that many black women choose to see such an obviously degrading portrayal as some sort of win. Black men for the most part don't focus their anger towards black women in such overt ways. All men are sexual opportunists after all. But your motivation is different isn't it? Your anger at all black men is reflective of your need to obliterate yourself, and offer the highest insult to your father. The highest insult being rejecting his genetics. You and many of your peers are evidence that we are a very, very sick people. With any luck, both your kind and weak minded black men will die out in the next thirty years or so. Because the truth is, we as a race don't need either of you.

@Trudy You really get to the heat of the matter going into complex detail.  Guess you've reduced someone to a burned cinder.
