Did you know drinking heavily is not only good for you but also good for those around you? It’s true, sort of, or at least it will be this Tuesday night when the Lymphoma Research Foundation hosts Swirl: A Wine Tasting Event at La Gorce Country Club (5685 Alton Rd., Miami Beach). For $100 a ticket, you’ll either not be drinking any Mad Dog or you’ll be drinking a whole lot of it. Either way, it will probably be a pretty special drinking night for you. Funds raised at the event will go to the Lymphoma Research Foundation’s patient and educational services, public awareness efforts, advocacy for government funding for research and cures, and other services for the lymphoma community. It’s the foundation’s first Miami Beach event, so instead of featuring speakers and an outreach program, this will be more of a “cultivation event,” connecting community members who are interested in supporting the group’s initiatives. Of course, if you’re the type of person who hears the word “charity” and pauses only to laugh before getting back to huffing radon, there is still the expertly assembled wine flight. For one night only, riffraff like you will be let into one of the most exclusive addresses in Miami Beach; unlike cancer of the lymphatic system, La Gorce membership isn’t available to just anyone. Even Michael Jordan was reportedly banned for life after wearing cargo shorts on the La Gorce golf course last year. In general, the club keeps pretty tight-lipped about its membership, though supposedly Sylvester Stallone leaves his cargo shorts in his locker and Joe DiMaggio was a longtime member too. Has anyone heard from Joltin’ Joe lately? It’s possible that wine tasters will see a spectral figure in baggy pinstripes leaning against a mop in the La Gorce kitchen.
