Eat Like a Beast

If you want your baby-back baby-back baby-back ribs but are hard-pressed to find hunks of meat that meet your standards, you’re in luck. Ribfest is headed back to Zoo Miami (12400 SW 152nd St., Miami) this weekend, and six of the nation’s top ribbers will go head-to-head to earn the coveted title of “Best Barbecue” — with attendees reaping the meaty rewards. Contenders include folks from Illinois, Kansas, and Ohio, along with one Sunshine State entry — Skin and Bones from Arcadia. Their skills on the grill will be judged by chef Ralph Pagano, Kiss Country’s Darlene Evans, and other local notables. In addition to scoping out the competition, meat lovers can check out beer-inspired cooking demos and pairings at the Chef’s Corner, score Florida produce and local products at the farmers’ market, listen to live music (yes, mostly country, but some Southern and classic rock too), buy racks of juicy ribs, and generally bask in all things Southern. If you’re feeling extra-saucy, you can purchase a Zoo Miami/Ribfest combo ticket so you can get some post-pigout quality time with the wild animals. And we don’t mean the other attendees.
