Attention, nature junkies: Grab some closed-toed shoes, sunscreen, and a hat and head to the Biscayne Nature Center (6767 Crandon Blvd., Key Biscayne). Wade in waist-deep ocean water, drag a net, and see what sea life turns up. It might be a balloon fish or a spider crab. Before you know it, you might find your own personal Nemo. Seagrass beds are rich with life of all colors and sizes.
On the popular tour Seagrass Adventures, a naturalist guide leads novice adventurers (complete with all the gear they need) to the beach and stays by their side to ensure they’re catching approved creatures instead of protected species like conch. Then everybody regresses to their kindergarten show-and-tell days to identify their nets full of surprises. Through it all, attendees stock up on tons of fun information about marine life. And at the end of the tour, the little critters are gently released back into the ocean.
The tour is Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. and costs $15 per person. You must reserve your spot. Call 305-361-6767, ext. 119 for reservations or visit biscaynenaturecenter.org.
