Did you know that more than 300,000 Colombians live in Florida and that of the top 25 communities in the United States with the highest concentration of Colombians, 13 are located in Miami-Dade County?
Of course you did. We’ve all been to Dolphin Mall on a Saturday or shot aguardiente till 3 a.m. with our neighbors in Kendall.
Miami is Colombia, and to celebrate la República, the 305 is throwing down an epic Colombian Independence Festival this Sunday at 1 p.m. at Sun Life Stadium (2269 NW 199th St., Miami Gardens).
And for at least one familiar Colombian-American DJ, Sunday’s pachanga is all about the music.
“I have so many people rooting for me, people that work with me. They want to see me succeed,” Erick Morillo recently said in a candid interview with South West Four. The DJ has been battling addiction in Malibu but is eager to get behind the decks. “I mean, the music that I’ve got coming out in conjunction with me coming back — people better get ready, ’cause I’m coming hard!”
With additional performances by Grupo Niche, a friendly soccer match between Millonarios Fútbol Club and Honduras’ CD Olimpia, and all the Colombian street food you can stomach, you’ll forget you’re just off Florida’s Turnpike on the Dade-Broward border and not back in Bogotá for the afternoon.
