Boycott Miami Beach

On Memorial Day weekend, Miami Beach did a helluva job making sure African-Americans didn't feel welcome in the city. For the second straight year, the city's police department turned South Beach into a militarized zone to handle the 300,000-plus predominantly black visitors.

With the help of police, the city installed numerous cameras, 62 light towers, three watchtowers, and barricades along the sidewalks of Washington and Collins avenues. Roughly 400 officers from multiple agencies were deployed to keep the crowds in check.

I was there myself and saw three young black men riding scooters pulled over for no reason. A 14-year-old boy holding a puppy was put in a chokehold by a Miami-Dade cop for allegedly giving him "dehumanizing stares." And 414 people were sent to jail. All of these measures are designed to make African-Americans feel uncomfortable so they don't return next year. Hell, I felt more welcome in the city when I was a kid going to school at Fienberg Fisher Elementary and Miami Beach Senior High. Back then, African-Americans had to leave Miami Beach by sundown.

Miami Beach Mayor Matti Bower, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, and the African-American county commissioners should be ashamed of themselves for condoning the police department's Memorial Day weekend military operation. Prominent African-American lawyer H.T. Smith should be calling for another national boycott of the city like he did in 1991 after local leaders snubbed Nelson Mandela.

Every black politician should demand that the U.S. Justice Department investigate the city for violating people's civil rights.

Instead, they all sit back and say nothing when Miami Beach asks for police support from the county. Taxpayers should not be footing the bill to racially profile people who are visiting to have a good time. They should be treated like the folks who come here for Miami Music Week, the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, and the boat show.

I guess the only way to get these politicians to do something about this problem is to hire lobbyist Ron Book to tell them they need to be upset. That's the only way things get done around here.

I agree.  Since people believe its a black issue, let Miami cater to other folks. A surprise awakening will occur. Large crowds no matter who attends create chaotic circumstances. AA boycott Miami! Stop going to venues spending your money, time and energy to a place where you are not wanted. I for one don't shop at certain dept stores because of bad customer service. If I'm not treated with respect, I keep my dollars in my pocket and shop elsewhere. The US is surrounded by beaches. Find another venue. Go to a city that welcomes the crowd and the revenue that comes with it.  I know longer support anything/anyone that don't support me. I've learned its real easy to do so.

You gotta be kidding. This isnt a race issue at all. Is the city of miami racist as it is corrupt? Without a doubt. But miami police dont pullover just young black males, thay pullover All young males

Its not an issue about race, its an issue about crime

I used to work drive a bicycle taxi on south beach back in 08. South beach, its home and all but is a horriable sleezy filthy place. Memorial day weekend it gets crazier. Ive seen this. The things working that taxi on south beach give me nightmares to this day. Alotta local businesses I know close for the weekend because of how rowdy it gets , much like thay close during spring break in ft lauderdale.

300,000 plus people on a weekend known for chaos, exessive consumption and fights, youed be stupid not to have a heavy police presence. While nobody messed with me, man I saw somebody get stabbed and actually had to get out a guy from my taxi from my taxi for trying to pimp out his sister, his own sister in my bike. In my youth I was pulled over and hassled all the time , and iam a clean cut siclian kid. Its not a race thing so please dont turn it into one. People get drunk. People get stupid. Welcome to south beach. You need a heavy police presence on memorial day weekend

Miami will not be satisfied until this place becomes desolate like Daytona Beach. I watched a newscast last year about the Daytona business owners complaining about the lost of business revenue due to the dwindling numbers of African Americans not returning for Black College Reunion.

Where the economy here is already in the dumps w/SOBE business owners feeling the blunt of the economic decline, some establishments can't afford to have one client turned away. Until the owners start speaking out, don't really expect change.  With the continued racially motivated police harassment, you are starting to see Miami being run like the 3rd world country it is.

Mr. Campbell, I see your point in why you say boycott, but I say let them fall to their own demise. Like in Daytona, Blacks will take their revenue elsewhere! For some reason, Miami Politian's believe that this city can exist without them. They will find it hard to schedule any events here in the future. As if this is the only beach on the east coast.

The answer is NOT to boycott.  The answer is to return and return again.  Peacefully march across MacCarther Causway like Selma to Montgomery in 1963 if need be.  But don't simply boycott Miami Beach by enabling racists to continue.  Ask the players of the Miami Heat to lead that march and see what happens.

This is not about racism, you can stop name-calling and placing the blame on professionals who would rather spend their Memorial Day weekend relaxing or, on duty and supporting reasonable tourist behavior. No, the criminal, animalistic behavior, manifested by an inordinately large number attending this venue, evokes the prudently defensive corralling methods that were applied. These tactics were necessary to maintain some semblance of order, rule of law and protect the community from the crimes suffered during this venue in years past. The peace officers of Miami Beach didn't drive the $money out of the market during this venue, the venue's attendees did: That's objective; fix it, or take it to the ghetto.

jonahmoriarty
jonahmoriarty

@j-j-roberts Of course it's racism j-j Roberts (or whatever your real name is that you're hiding).  You can try to mask it but it shines through regardless (i.e. your "animalistic" and "ghetto") remarks.

Lets go back two years to the weekend that the police shot at a guy 116 times and no gun found (until three convient days later).  Look at the arrest numbers of for Urban Weekend that year (or the year before) and compare them to the arrest numbers of the nice white people during Ultra Music Fest.  I think that you'll find that the nice whites created more issues and crimes and conduct.

Let me know what you find.  BTW- The white event had "inordinately" large numbers too- which makes Urban Weekend NOT '
inordinately', now does it?

jonahmoriarty
jonahmoriarty

@j-j-roberts @jonahmoriarty BTW jj Roberts.  As you like to avoid the subject of the number of arrests made during Ultra Music (mostly white) here it is;

167 Ultra Music Arrests.  178 Urban Weekend.

Kind of the same huh?  And PS.  Urban Weekend was started in 2001. Long before many million dollar home owners bought here.   Take care!

@j-j-roberts @jonahmoriarty JJ Roberts   Miami Beach IS a beach.  South Beach IS a beach.  That's how we market it around the world regardless if you like it or not.

Now this has been fun but you're actually starting to bore me.  Perhaps you should get yourself a job with the Fashion Police and fill-up your extra time.

But first, you really should read the stuff that you write.  Like everyone has to check in with you to determine if they're dressed correctly?  Fashion Police buddy.   BTW-  You posted now 4 times without provideing what I asked of you. That would be the number of 'nice' white kids that have been arrested during Ultra Music Fest.  Remember that?  Which you continue to avoid?

Now off to the Fashion Police with ya!

j-j-roberts
j-j-roberts

@jonahmoriarty @j-j-roberts and, one additional thing that I stated in an earlier post:  Miami Beach, is not just a beach.  It's not pine barrens and cheap hotels cascading to a sandy stretch like Daytona, it's not rough Houston descending to a humid, sandy, dirty, sandy stretch like Galveston, Texas.  I would no more bring a red-neck, drunk, raunchy, white, biker's saloon fest from Texas to Miami Beach.  Miami Beach is a coastal island augmented by man-made islets and islands with multi-million dollar real estate, and it's a viable city with 4-5 star world class hotels, restaurants and venues.  It's multi-cultural, it has class it has culture and it's not crude.  It is a coastal island with a beach.  It has a lot of high-dollar commercial activity in the adjacency.  You don a dress when you leave the beach.  You're not throwing down ice cream cones on a rundown Jersey boardwalk with a Ferris wheel.  It's probably just the wrong venue for folks who don't respect the environment.  String on the beach, cover it with a sensual sheer on Lincoln Road and wear nice flats.  Keep the conversation calm.  Let's all chill.  It only requires a little bit of self-control.

j-j-roberts
j-j-roberts

@jonahmoriarty @j-j-roberts No, those with class throw on a flutter-sleeve, crochet or even more sensual sheer, blouson dress over what would be the crude vulgarity of a undersized bathing suit and sip a rum-spiked horchata in voices with sexy undertones and eyes batting with sensual, flirtatious charm.  And, in my case, that's better with chestnut eyes and the darker, the better.  One just does not need crude vulgarity, hyper-loud, out-of-place crudeness.  I'm no more a fan of a Beiber-like racing through a residential family neighborhood, in blatant disregard for children and safety - That's just as "animalistic."  And a black NFL star rightly chased him down - Not for racist cause, just to assert order and bring him in line with reasonable behavior.  I wander if the NFL star were white and Beiber black, would we be talking about racist motives here?

jonahmoriarty
jonahmoriarty

@j-j-roberts J-J    But you failed to post the number of arrests of the nice 'white' kids that attend Ultra Music Fest.  Some 500,000 people.   As for the dress code that seems to have you upset, Miami Beach is a 'Beach', it's not Wall Street.  I venture to guess that you would not be as upset if a pretty white girl or Brazilian girl sat next to you at an outside cafe- while wearing a thong.  It's a beach sir, get over it. Bikini's Happen!

@jonahmoriartyI grew up in the ghetto.  When one can’t drive a scooter or a car in normal fashion, passing through traffic in slalom-like fashion, screaming from vehicle to vehicle it requires some descriptor – “Wreckless?,” “Unlawful?,” “Unreasonable?,” or, screaming and guffawing without concern for fellow patrons “Rude?,” “Uncultured?,” or, when combining a lack of appropriate attire, or pants falling down, or a size 4 on a size 14, or other, minimalistic dress, with shouting, guffawing, gesticulating wildly, perhaps “ANIMALISTIC” works just nicely.  First of all, I was engaged to a black woman, only to have it interrupted by a very racist father;  her father.  I am married to a woman who is not of my culture, ethnicity or language background.  I use my real name – You see what I mean?  A lack of objectivity always manifests itself in baseless accusations by those who are themselves guilty of bias, or, just unable to address objective realities (your averring I’m hiding my name), lies, distortions (equating ‘animalistic’ and ‘ghetto’ to racism), and an attempt to distort the issue into anything other than an objective evaluation of what has occurred,  and occurs with this event.  Large numbers don’t bring the problems, other than a stress on parking and other resources and need to channel movement for crowd control.  Even in large numbers, an event can be both safe and profitable.  When an event fails to generate income, or worse, drives other income away, due to stressed city resources and change in ambiance, irrespective whether the patrons are white, black, latino, straight, gay, whatever...  ... no one needs a venue where the crowd just won’t conduct themselves in a safe, respectful, cultural manner - period.  It’s not about the color of one’s skin, it is about the content of one’s character and, in this case, its impact on the community.  The crime statistics and loss of income during Urban Beach Week speaks for itself – That’s objective.  (Unlike you, I’ll refrain from being spurious about whether your name and intent is genuine)  – Have a great day.

Great job Luke and Voice: Change the article's title and relaunch it because you couldn't handle the overwhelming commentary, which shed light on its fallacy. This is tantamount to the denials of reality spewed by the Boston bomber's parents. If you don't agree with reality just deny it, and blame whatever occurs, or occurred on someone else. No community wastes resources on an event. However, community governments have a responsibility to their citizenry to recognize potential or actual threats and preempt or react accordingly. Objectively, Urban Beach Weekend's burden on the community has been manifested through excessive crime (hence, a prudent police response), excessive pollution, unacceptable behavior, dress and noise. Objectively, the community has a right to not want to get caught behind impetuous behavior that prohibits their freedom of movement (e.g., not presenting tickets to parking attendants and expecting everyone else to wait), driving scooters and cars in slalom like fashion through traffic and disrupting normal traffic flow, playing stereos so loud that normal conversations are impossible, strolling around at eateries in inappropriate attire, etc., etc. The aversion of Miami Beach resident's to this event and its draw is not an aversion to blacks - It's not racial, as in white versus black, nor should it be black versus white: But the issue is black and white to anyone willing to consider it objectively - Every action brings about an equal and opposite reaction: If you want the community to be respected, then conduct your affairs respectfully, and in such a manner that does not evoke a full-scale, resource intensive, defensive posture that was FORCED ONTO the Miami Beach community, by the unreasonable, unruly, mobs and resultant crimes that occurred during previous years. Miami Beach does not want to expend excessive resources to enable any group to act like animals. Please boycott it and take it to Detroit along the lake or to west Philly, or anywhere else that doesn't have 4-5 star Zaggat rated restaurants, world class hotels and shopping. Those who want to act like ghetto rats would do well to act like ghetto rats in the ghetto - This is a world-class, MULTI-CULTURAL, beach community that has proven that it can conduct its affairs with harmony and respect for all cultures - The inordinate number of ghetto rats that attend this event would do well to learn to respect our community, its citizens, laws, rules, resources and ambiance.

Why does it always have to be a racial thing? In the very near future blacks are going to be the majority and whites are headed to being the minority so what will happen then? what card will blacks use to make them the victim? Every time there is a black event there has to be someone who says that they were racial profiled or treated wrongly. It's enough already! Whites don't have white awards yet blacks do, whites don't have white entertainment tv yet blacks have BET... Imagine if whites did have those things....OMG it would be a all out war! If you want things to be equal it's about time blacks stop acting like the victim once again IT'S ENOUGH ALREADY!!! AND FYI if you look back on all the memorial day weekends in south beach when the security wasn't beefed up the amount of arrests, and murders were through the roof, so i actually think it was for a reason not just because Miami wanted to be racist!

If you don't want to be treated like escaped zoo animals then don't act like escaped zoo animals. Negros can NOT act the least bit civilized when in groups/ Just ask any store owner, park employee or school teacher.  Shit - you savages can't even behave at a kindergarten graduation (Cleveland) or a mother's day parade (New Orleans). You can't even behave at the MLK day celebration! (again New Orleans)

Imagine no police presence during Memorial Day weekend. Miami Beach would end up  flattened. Its been proven year after year that they can't act civilized, so they get what they deserve. I have a black friend who went one time, and never again. Not  because of the police, but because of how barbaric people acted.

We know how it worked out, when MB-PD was not prepared....  so I can understand WHY the PD prepares and reacts.

-on the bright side, no one was killed this weekend, so it was a success.

Boycott?   please do.  memphis would be a good choice

Maybe if the african americans that come to Miami on Memorial weekend new how to act civilized, behave like humans and treat Miami Beach like it were their home rather than leave trash all over the place and cause fights and trouble then that wouldn't happen. But since they come attached with violence and savage behavior then martial law should be applied when they visit.
