Miami has something of a split personality. On one hand, there’s the nightlife scene, the wild child who stays up every other night partying at LIV, Mansion, and Cameo. On the other, there’s the Deering Estate, the peaceful, serene one who’s into nature and learning about the Magic City’s unique history of Native Americans and extinct animals. The two differ like day and night, but together they make one hell of a city to explore. And you can’t have one without the other. So balance your late-night partying with early-morning canoeing at the guided Sunrise Canoe Tour at the Deering Estate at Cutler (16701 SW 72nd Ave., Palmetto Bay). Get up close and personal with nature as you navigate through the waters. As the sun breaks the darkness of the night sky and the Earth comes to life, explore the seven-acre mangrove island and restored bird rookery of Chicken Key, mangrove forests, marine life, and hundreds of bird species that live in the area. The tour runs from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday. The meeting point is the Deering Estate’s Visitor Center. Guests should arrive 15 to 20 minutes prior to the beginning of the tour. The cost is $30 for adults and $20 for children ages 9 to 14. All equipment (canoes, paddles, and life vests) is included, but closed-toe shoes that can get wet are required. Comfortable paddling clothes, a hat, sunscreen, bug spray, water, and snacks are recommended.
