African-Americans Need to Use Condoms

African-Americans need to learn to protect themselves. We're number one in murders, gun violence, poverty, unemployment, teen pregnancies, and sexually transmitted diseases.

I'm tired of being number one.

Blacks account for more new HIV infections and HIV-related deaths than any other racial/ethnic group in the United States. Of the 1.1 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the country, 510,000 are African-Americans. New infections follow the same pattern.

The New York and Miami metropolitan areas have the greatest numbers of blacks living with HIV. Contracting HIV/AIDS is the second biggest killer in the African-American community after gun violence.

Teen pregnancies among young black girls are also increasing fast. According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, Florida is among the top five states when it comes to the rate of non-Hispanic black teenage girls getting pregnant. Black women also have the highest rate of abortions, accounting for 30 percent of all abortions, according to the 2010 census.

That's why I quickly accepted an offer from New York-based prophylactics company b Condoms to do a safe-sex campaign. I didn't blink at the opportunity to hand out 6,000 free Platinum XL b Condoms to several social service agencies in Miami. If I could hand out a million, I would.

African-American celebrities must take an active role in changing people's mindset. We need to talk about preventing sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancies by advocating safe sex. Young people in the inner city can't even afford to buy something off the McDonald's dollar menu. How are we going to let them bring a child into this world if they don't have the resources — like a steady job — to take care of that kid.

If I can convince young African-Americans that it's OK to use condoms, it's a small step in ending our own genocide.

Getting a proper fit to a condom is super important.  I thought there was something wrong with me for years until I discovered Magnum XL condoms, because the one-size-fits-all idea is bogus!

You do what you can to help black folks, and they make you wonder why you even bother. But they're our people, and we gotta love 'em regardless. One thing for sure, though: can't blame this one on the white man.... what am I sayin'? 'Course I can!

The desire to not want to be number one in the areas cited above, and wanting to reverse these trends in the black community, is a noble one. However, Mr. Campbell's suggestion that the answer is in distributing condoms and getting folks to buy into the "safe sex" idea would only fuel these problems and make them worse.  More than half the women going in for abortions will admit they are there BECAUSE their birth control FAILED! And condoms alone can offer very little, if any, protection from the now over 50 different sexually-transmitted diseases that are out there, some that can cause sterility.  How can a condom that can allow sperm to get through on occasion prevent the AIDS virus from getting through when the AIDS virus is comparatively smaller as is a dime to a basket ball. The AIDS virus is the dime, the sperm the basketball! Studies show, too, that condoms will wear away a woman's cervix over time, leading to many different complications. Condoms will do nothing to prevent the different cancers caused from illicit sexual behavior.  Do your research.  Nature will never be fooled.  Abstinence until marriage (faithfully to one person) is THE only means of SAFE SEX! And LIFE is always the right , and only, CHOICE to make. Abortion is NEVER justified.  Saying we shouldn't bring a child into this world unless we have the resources does an injustice to the child in the womb.  Who are we to choose death for any child?  The resources or those who can provide them can ALWAYS be found.  As Mother Teresa once said, "No child is an unwanted child." Someone somewhere is out there to provide for the child's needs.

@astecklein Your statistics on abortion and contraception failure are completely false. I think you probably know that, and are making statements contrary to the fact that contraception decreases pregnancy AND abortion rates exponentially in order to push a conservative agenda predicated on nonfactual beliefs. And obviously, your information on the AIDS virus being able to get through a condom is completely factually incorrect.

Basically all of the information you've presented is completely factually incorrect, and does a disservice to the public. People, educate yourselves against people who push lies like this. they're doing it for a reason!

@astecklein   A lot of what you state I agree with.  However, the abstinence untill marriage notion I can't see mostly people successfully complying with such a goal. Further, it is well known and easy to see that not every child is a wanted child, loved, and properly taken care of child. This fact is universal! Just because a child has been made does not mean the resources/appropriate environment for said child will materialize. Mother Teresa may have believed every child is wanted, but it ain't true.  I don't condone abortions, but I agree with the author black people need to take appropriate PREVENTIVE actions.

@Ignignokt

Nah shooting blanks after you already have 10 kids isn't manly LOL!!! I do wish more people would take this power into their own hands instead of harping about planned parenthood and eugenics. How about remove that market? As long as we irresponsibly get pregnant by people who don't care to marry and have a family, then poverty will go on and our STD/HIV infection rate and OOW pregnancies will continue to rise. Great post!
