Slammin’ Rhymes

It doesn’t get more old school than pianos and poetry — both have been around for centuries. Some might even say they’re a little on the stodgy side. But add a little young blood to the mix, and the hip factor is exponentially upped. That’s the premise of Piano Slam, a classical music/hip-hop mashup showcasing the work of Miami’s talented youthful scribes. For the fifth incarnation of the event, middle and high school students across the county have competed to get their written works of art read aloud to the sounds of tickled ivories — and win cash prizes to boot. The best of the best have won a place in the big show this Thursday at the Adrienne Arsht Center (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami). Famed piano duo Elizabeth and Marcel Bergmann will mix up Mozart, Messiaen, and Bach with beats by DJ and rapper Brimstone127, and Miami’s own award-winning playwright and actor Tarell Alvin McCraney will play the part of literary chair. Big names, pretty words, and epic beats FTW.
