It’s a veritable jungle out there in South Florida. After all, this is the tropics. We share space with a plethora of critters — from scorpions and parrots to alligators and iguanas. Some are supercuddly; others are deceptively deadly. Miami author Michael Largo knows all about the beasties. He’s been collecting data on animals for decades, and his new tome — The Big, Bad Book of Beasts: The World’s Most Curious Creatures — delves into truths and legends about our furry friends. The book is filled with helpful tidbits about Florida’s fierce flora and fauna. For example, did you know that the state’s most dangerous local animal is the jellyfish? “People die from the allergic reaction from jellyfish more than alligators,” Largo explains. So yeah, you should be more afraid of a slow-moving cnidarian than a razor-toothed predator. No matter the animal, Largo says, knowing your enemy is key. Picking up a copy of The Big, Bad Book of Beasts is probably a good first step. You can snag one at Books & Books (265 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables), where Largo will sign copies at 6:30 p.m. this Monday.
