People say that clowns, and in effect comedians, are all crying on the inside. Audiences really don’t care as long as they’re given adequate distraction from their mundane lives, cheating spouses, and exorbitant car payments. Hey, we just want to laugh.
So it’s a good thing we have a star-studded lineup of comedians of all stripes at the South Beach Comedy Festival. Apart from the popular headliners, the annual fest also introduces up-and-coming yucksters and showcases local favorites — all to help us laugh the pain away. Performing this year at the Fillmore Miami Beach (1700 Washington Ave., Miami Beach) are current and previous Saturday Night Live cast members Seth Myers (Thursday, April 18), Tracy Morgan (Friday, April 19), and unabashed pot smoker Sarah Silverman (appropriately performing Saturday, 4/20). But the honor of kicking off the festivities goes to Mad Cat Theatre Company, presenting Charming Acts of Misery this Wednesday at 7 and 9:30 p.m. The play, written by Jessica Farr and directed by Paul Tei, retells the “life and death of Isabella Blow: from rags to bitches.”
