I've never been a fan of The First 48, the reality TV show that for 12 seasons has followed homicide investigators on the job. The Miami Police Department is one of nine agencies that allows ITV Studios to film detectives working furiously to solve a murder within the first two days of finding a body. My problem is that the majority of the Miami homicides on The First 48 originate in Overtown, Liberty City, Little Haiti, and other predominantly black neighborhoods.
The First 48 brainwashes a national cable television audience into believing these places are war zones. The episodes are like public service announcements telling viewers: "Don't go there."
Just imagine a family in Omaha, trying to decide what places to visit in the Magic City, watching Miami homicide Det. Kevin Ruggiero arrive at the scene where an 18-year-old African-American was shot in the head while riding a jitney. The show scares viewers into missing out on a big part of Miami culture, from Mama Lucy's Home Style Cooking, which serves the best ribs in town, to Big Night in Little Haiti, the monthly celebration of Haitian culture, to the big-rivalry high school football games that unite the community.
No major corporation or entrepreneur would dare open a new business in Overtown or Liberty City after seeing all the violence plastered on The First 48.
The show also has a negative effect on people living in the hood. It's one of the most-watched programs in the ghetto. The show promotes the nihilistic outlook on life that infects so many young black men. Being profiled on The First 48 is attaining superstardom.
The show doesn't do anything to address the ills that make these places so bleak. It provides no context about the politicians who sell out the community to accused criminals such as Dennis Stackhouse, the Boston developer who falsely promised to build a $250 million biopharmaceutical park in Liberty City just so he could double-bill Miami-Dade County for $500,000 and pocket the money.
The City of Miami allows ITV Studios to profit from the blood of a predominantly poor, African-American constituency. City leaders should tell The First 48 producers to turn off the cameras.
People need to take responsibility for their actions. The First 48 is simply showing murder investigations that happen to come from certain areas in Miami. This happens for a reason, bad parenting, bad school systems or racism. The woe is me card and pointing the finger does nothing but hurt your cause. Racism exists in every culture.
I live in Miami and do not consider Overtown Little Haiti or Liberty City a place for fun time. I live in Little Havana and still don't like to walk around there at night- hell sometimes if I go to SOBE I have my pocket knife in tow. Miami is a dangerous city if you do not know anything about it or the people. Those three areas are the worst of the city and why would you want to tell scared white people from Omaha to visit?
CRIME IN THE HOOD ADD WHITE FOLKS DRUNK DRIVING MURDERS TO HOMICIDE NUMBERS WHITE FOLKS WILL NOT BE HAPPY LOL
PEOPLE!!!! Please do some homework on Luther Campbell before you make dumb statements as so many listed below. lol
most on here complain about a person that is born and raised in the same area(s) he speak of... I wonder how many people commenting on here lives in these areas?
Luke re-wrote this "so called" article from another civil rights group "ColorofChange" that recently claims that the show "COPS" portrays minorities in a bad light. Guess ol' Uncle Luke is running out of BS material.
ONLY LOSERS BLAME OTHERS FOR THEIR ACTIONS or FAILURES and will keep on FAILING with the same old blame game. It's all about responsibility and accountability... MAN UP!!!!!!!
Uncle Kook - you gotta be shittin' me......how do you write this crap with a straight face. Thanks to Liberty City and Overtown The First 48 will never run out of material.
Luke's idiotic self-contradictions know no bounds. He constantly calls attention to murders in Liberty City, Overtown, and other black neighborhoods, but shames "The First 48" for doing the same thing. You're not the only one who can talk about violent crime in black areas, Luke.
Here's a fresh one, a few hours after my original post. Was murdered on his driveway. The poor guy wasn't even a tourist.
To anyone reading this please take my advise, stay out of the cities Luke mentioned. If you are a traveler, make sure to research the area you will be staying in along with the areas you plan on visiting (for any city or state), prior to taking a trip. It may save your life!
I love it when people blame others for their actions. I suppose this is the media's fault as well?
So, The First 48 Gives Black Miami a Bad Rap? I thought it was the stars of the show, as Luke calls them those "Black Miami" folks. The reason the show has been so successful for the past 12 years and counting is SOMEONE DID THEIR HOMEWORK in choosing the perfect location to film all the heinous murders they'll ever need . All they have to do is show up with cameras rolling. This is "TRUE" reality TV… you better believe it! If you don't think so come down to one of those areas good 'ol Uncle Luke mentioned… you might be on the show next (under a yellow tarp). Sorry Luke, the problem 'aint the show.
uncle Luke u can't be any more on the $ than on this one! these cops are lying, committing perjury ,dont care about the truth as long as they look good on TV and advance their careers ! in fact Sgt. Cooper ( an Afro American female no less) recently became Commander Cooper! She build her career on many innocent young Afro Americans innocent people! ( of course not all r innocent, but one convicted innocent man is one too many !) of course this is of no consequence to Cooper and her detectives (Ford, Passmore and other criminals as long as they look good). The pressure of this show make them commit crimes in order to "resolve" crimes!
I wonder how confident Luke would be going to those neighborhoods as an Asian or white caucasian. I wonder how many AA's would book lodging for a vacation in those neighborhoods ?
Luke, why don't you move to Overtown, Liberty City, or Little Haiti..or maybe open a business there? Oh that's right, because you know better than that. They are doing that family in Omaha or anywhere else for that matter a great favor.
@rad123 by that statement alone, you know nothing about Luke.... lol do some homework before you make an sss-backwards statement like that. Luke roamed and live in those areas for years before becoming the man he is.
YES! agreed!! Anyone from South Florida knows better than to go to Overtown, etc., and it has nothing to do with a TV show. And tourists head straight to the beach - Luke, maybe you should go back to the 'hood' and mentor these young men instead of wasting everyone's time writing these ridiculous columns blaming everyone else for "Black Miami's" problems. Why not try to run for office...oh wait, yea that didn't work out too well last time for you...
