Five years ago, In the Heights opened on Broadway. It was nominated for 14 Tony Awards in 2008, won four including Best Musical, and in 2009 won a Pulitzer. But what, In the Heights, have you done for us lately?
Five years ago, the economy was booming, Sherman Hemsley was still alive, and the only people who’d heard Russell Crowe sing were the masochists who’d voluntarily bought his Russ Le Roq albums (and a few dead-eyed loons locked away in CIA black sites). Way to go, In the Heights.
But time heals all wounds (except, like, abscesses). So why not celebrate In the Heights with the new Actors’ Playhouse anniversary production at the Miracle Theatre (260 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables)? It features South Florida actors such as Nick Duckart alongside members of the show’s original Broadway and national touring casts. Salsa! Hip-hop! Dancing! Romance! Washington Heights!
Wednesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: March 7. Continues through April 7, 2013
