Chick-fil-A and LGBT Leaders Need to End Their War

I'd like to offer my pro bono services as a mediator to Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy, whose comments against gay marriage have made him public enemy number one in the LGBT community. Like Roger Fisher, the great Harvard scholar who helped engineer the 1979 Eygpt-Israel peace treaty, I want to broker a truce between my favorite fast-food chain and my homosexual and transgender brothers and sisters.

Both sides have drawn lines in the sand. In January, Cathy — whose family has donated millions of dollars to charity organizations opposed to gay marriage — reaffirmed his support of "biblical families" like Adam and Eve.

"Families are very important to our country," Cathy said. "And they're very important to those of us who are concerned about being able to hang on to our heritage."

His comments once again reignited a vocal response from LGBT activist groups. Last week, thousands of students at the University of New Mexico and North Carolina's Elon University demanded that school officials at both colleges kick out Chick-fil-A franchises. In Santa Barbara, California, dozens of gay rights advocates protested at a new Chick-fil-A.

Despite the calls for a boycott, Chick-fil-A is one of the most popular fast-food joints in the nation. I'm one of their loyal customers because of their fantastic customer service. The employees are straight out of Pleasantville, the 1998 movie about a '50s dream world. Walk into Chick-fil-A or pull up to the drive-thru, and you'll get showered with congeniality. Nobody has a frown. And the food is great. The waffle fries are always hot and fresh; the cookies are warm and soft.

So I find it hard to boycott Chick-fil-A. But I can't turn my back on the LGBT community either. I am sure we can reach a common ground. In fact, Chick-fil-A's Cathy and homosexuals have more in common than they realize. For starters, they're all happier than a rainbow.

So, Dan and LGBT leaders: Let's have a gay ol' party at my place, sit down, eat some delicious chicken, and figure this damn thing out already.

To those that think Chick-Fil-A has only donated "a few thousand dollars" to anti-gay causes:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WinShape

"The WinShape Foundation is an Americancharitable endeavor of the fast-foodrestaurant chainChick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy and his family. WinShape also has a sister foundation that was started by Cathy's daughter Trudy and her husband John called Lifeshape."

[...]

"Since 2003, WinShape has donated over $5 million to several anti-gay groups, including Eagle ForumFocus on the FamilyFellowship of Christian AthletesFamily Research CouncilExodus International and the Marriage & Family Legacy Fund. Approximately $2 million was given in 2009 and almost the same amount in 2010. WinShape's financial support of these groups has caused gay-rights advocates to denounce Chick-fil-A and protest against its restaurants and products on various college and university campuses including Northeastern University and NYU. Northeastern University's Student Senate voted on February 28, 2012 to cancel plans for an on-campus Chick-Fil-A restaurant and an online petition against the NYU franchise was also launched that same month."

SECOND LGBTs were not angry about what Dan Cathy feels about marriage equality, he has donatred 5 MILLION to avowed HATE GROUPS who actively denouce LGBTs and our families, try to stop anti-bullying laws, and funded KILL THE GAYS in Uganda.

THIRD Dan Cathy PURPOSELY insulted the gay/lesbian community as a PR stunt, he was caught on Twitter saying he had lit up Facebook with angry gays.

FOURTH eat where ever the hell you want...but if you want a big lard drenched wad of waffle fry, don't include me as a BROTHER.

FIRST you should quit using the CLINICAL term HOMOSEXUAL, that is used by offensive folks who hate LGBTS so much they refuse to call us what we call us. The term homosexual is ONLY used to differentiate a group from heterosexuals in scientific and medical discussions, It would be equivalent to my calling you negroid instead of African American

1st.  "Like Roger Fisher, the great Harvard scholar who helped engineer the 1979 Eygpt-Israel peace treaty, I want to broker a truce" are you really trying to compare yourself to a Harvard Scholar?! yeah right!

2nd. "thousands of students at the University of New Mexico and North Carolina's Elon University demanded that school officials at both colleges kick out Chick-fil-A franchises" and "In Santa Barbara, California, dozens of gay rights advocates protested at a new Chick-fil-A" most likely those same people ended up going to Chick-fil-A for at least one meal that week, especially the ones at both of the above mentioned Universities.

3rd. "Despite the calls for a boycott, Chick-fil-A is one of the most popular fast-food joints in the nation." you can run all the polls and ask people all the questions you want, but it really comes down to what they will end up doing and not what they are saying.

4th. "I can't turn my back on the LGBT community" of course you can't but mostly, it's not necessarily a good idea to turn to turn that general area in their direction haha

Unlike other quick-service restaurants, CFA offers healthy lifestyle options with 10 menu items with 10 or fewer grams of fat. Chick-fil-A cooks in 100 percent refined peanut oil which is naturally trans-fat and cholesterol free. In fact, the entire menu is free of trans fat.

Try the grilled chicken sandwich on whole grain bread, with a fruit cup and low-fat milk. The total meal is only 430 calories: Grilled chicken sandwich (290), fruit cup (50), low-fat milk (90).

There is serious misinformation and exaggeration about donations made by Chick-fil-A. Of the groups CFA donates to, the only organizations that could really be considered anti-gay are Exodus International and the Family Research Council, and they received just $1000 each, and not the $5 million you claim.

When you consider that CFA's total donations in the past three years is $68 million to all charitable causes, the amount given to these two entities represents only 0.00294% of all their donations.

Read the details at http://www.policymic.com/articles/12219/all-the-anti-gay-companies-you-fund-when-you-spend-5-25-on-a-chick-fil-a-sandwich (which is actually meant to be anti-CFA) and you'll see that the other groups are at worst not pro-gay. They are nevertheless being demonized because of relatively minor issues.

The reality is that CFA isn't donating to these groups because they are anti-gay, but because they are pro-marriage; there is a difference. CFA's main focus with these donations is to help strengthen existing marriages, especially those in crisis.

You've never denied Dan Cathy was CAUGHT on Twitter bragging how "he lit up Facebook with angry gays"..this was an INTENTIONAL publicity stunt.

you are a shill for Chick-fil-A, you haven't ever commented on anything BUT a Chick-fil-A article. Like I said STFU, I have no desire to waste another keystroke on you.

@boyinboycott

I would not treat you that way and neither would Chick-fil-A. I am sorry that you had these bad experiences, but your bitterness should not be directed at everyone that simply disagrees with you about same-sex marriage. Chick-fil-A doesn't hates gays, and neither do I.

AFTER you've had 3 assailants bash you with clubs...you tell me what words I can use. AFTER someone screams at you a half hour after your spouse died of heart failure, they have to rip out the carpet and strip the wallpaper from the hotel room, because the cardio myopathy was due to AIDS....you tell me what words I can use. AFTER the woman who asked you to father her and her lover's baby is knocked to the ground, and repeatedly kicked in her face....you tell me what words I can use. AFTER your lover is knocked unconscious on a New Orleans street with a tire iron at 9 am...you tell me what words I can use.

UNTIL then stfu

kturner8

@boyinboycott I have never used those words and neither has CFA. Yet, you and other gay activists regularly use the words "Hate", "Hate group", "Bigot" and "Homophobic" to refer  to CFA and to anyone that disagrees with you.

No. I was simply replying to your original post where you said "a big lard drenced wad of waffle fry". That is a false statement and I provided facts to show that CFA's waffle fries are made from 100 percent refined peanut oil which is free of trans fat and cholesterol. In fact, CFA's entire menu is free of trans fat.

"xodus International: Exodus International Board MemberJohn Schmiererbegan his trips to Uganda in 2009, preaching alongside Nazi revisionist Scott Lively, spreading hatred of gay people to the people and leaders of the country. This directly led to their legislation requiring the execution of some gay people.

In Schmierer’s future trips to Uganda, he would whip up anti-gay furor with lies linking homosexuality to child abuse, calling for mandatory “conversion therapy” for homosexuals and any other number of falsehoods he could come up with."

@boyinboycott @kturner8

That is utter hogwash! Your comment is just so far out there that it doesn't even disserve a reply. How do you allow yourself to get sucked into such propaganda and then try to spread it as fact. You ought to know better.

@boyinboycott @kturner8 Your links prove my point. The two main organizations that everyone mentions as anti-gay are Exodus Internationation and Family Research Council and they only received a $1000 each from CFA and not the $5 million you claim. The other organizations are NOT anti-gay, but pro-marriage. There is a difference!

The other readers here need to know that your sources are from  Huffington's "Gay Voices' and other ultra-liberal sites, so they are far from being objective.
