Dancing Into Flora

During Botanica, the latest high-tech performance from the Momix troupe, the dancers bloom. No, really. Through fantastical costumes, set designs, and special effects, flowers blossom, creatures emerge, and the entire stage comes to life in vibrant colors and with brilliant props. It’s all set to music from Vivaldi mixed with chirps of birds, in an “herbal remedy and natural aphrodisiac” appropriate for big and little audience members alike. Momix is the brainchild of Moses Pendleton, the choreographer behind the groundbreaking Pilobolus Dance Theater, which presses boundaries of what the human form can do. With this troupe, the pushed boundaries include 3-D onstage imagery and live human-plant morphing. Not surprisingly, the stunningly beautiful Momix performances have been featured in ads and IMAX movies, along with more traditional settings on international stages. The dancers/illusionists appear this time at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center (10950 SW 211th St., Cutler Bay) Saturday at 8 p.m. Earlier in the day, enthusiasts are invited to a free master class to explore movement and spectacle for an hour and a half, starting at 10 a.m.
